2021 CA LB Raesjon Davis (USC Verbal)

The thing with Ohio State is they’re the one school who hasn’t promised Raesjon a starting spot or even told him how much he’ll play. They said come in ready to work hard and compete and you’ll earn your minutes and that’s all we’re asking for.
I really appreciate that this is the message from Ohio State. I'd wager we could name some guys that wanted the promise of playing time and the programs that gave it to them. Personally, I don't care how talented a guy is, if he wants promised playing time he's probably better off somewhere else. I'll take the guy who wants to come in and compete over the guy who wants to be given a spot every day.

While USC remains the Crystal Ball favorite to land Davis, a native of Santa Ana, California, he told 247Sports' Greg Biggins that the visit to Columbus improved Ohio State's chances of landing his commitment.

“I loved it there,” Davis told 247Sports. “I would definitely say the trip moved them up my list, not just because I liked it but my parents really liked it there too. The best part for me was being around all the players. All the early enrollees were with me the whole time and showed us around the campus and the city itself.

“I already knew Evan (Pryor) from 7v7 and Tre (TreVeyon Henderson) from the Future 50 and I was able to meet all the other guys as well and they were great to be around. Kyle (McCord) was super cool, I really enjoyed being around him. I knew Jack (Sawyer) already too and like him a lot, Jaylen (Johnson) is a great dude and like I said, all the guys were great and I really connected well with all of them.”

My gut says the guy may have been leaning slightly Trojan before this visit but as of now he’s legit torn between the 2 and would be hard pressed to pick one today. Sure he may lean one way but I bet it’s not 100%

Just seems like a recruitment where he truly decides just a few days before. Maybe I’m wrong but I see the good guys having a real shot here.

If depth chart wasn’t in our favor I may not say that but it may be the X factor here. Guys can say all they want that it doesn’t matter and they want to compete either way but if a kid is torn between schools .......it matters at that point. I’ve no idea the depth at USC but if the Bucks were rolling a bunch of young studs in the Natty it sure would not help right now.

I'd bet vcash that when he was on tOSU campus, he was loving it, and ready to pull the ripcord. When he got home, after a 5 hour plane ride (including layover), he might have had second thoughts. A Cali guy looking at and feeling the crispness of winter has gotta think warm. Anyway, USC does turn out pros, and even if the coach is canned, USC will attract a good to great coach. Methinks his parents loving tOSU campus (and the open spaces, trees, etc) could be a turning point. USC is a pretty compact, built-out, did I say small? campus in the middle of a not-so-great area. Hey, tOSU has HIgh Street and it's many opportunities. He mentioned that in two years, seven LBs will be moving on, giving him an equal or better chance to get some major minutes. On the other hand, USC has those gorgeous song girls to ogle. I'm 'leaning' towards tOSU for Raesjon's services. Go Bucks!

“We text pretty much every day,” Davis said. “We’ve been talking pretty much through my whole commitment ever since they offered me, throughout my whole process. I love him. He’s a super cool dude. He’s one of the only main coaches that I really click with. So I really like him a lot. That’s really why I’m stuck on Ohio State. And he knows my parents really well, and they’re all cool. He really clicks with my parents, that’s what it is. He clicks with my parents, and he makes it feel very family-like.

“I think it’s the personality because my dad doesn’t really like a lot of coaches like that. So he really likes him a lot. He says he always talks to him. I guess they talk more than me and him talk. They talk a lot. He always just says, ‘Yeah, I was just talking to Coach Washington.’”

“I know he’ll help me with the off-the-ball stuff,” Davis said. “And I do a lot of on-the-ball rushing, and I know he’ll be able to help me with on-ball stuff, engaging and getting off the ball. I know he’ll be able to fix my technique and get me ready for the next level.

“He says I play fast, I play physical so he just loves how I can rush off the edge and play coverage at the same time. So I know he wants to use me like that.”

Well, it sounds like the parents are on board with Raesjon leaving the west coast. And from what I've gathered, he sounds 50/50 himself. Is that going to out-weight the proximity of SC and the colder weather in Columbus? I think in the end he picks tOSU. A chance to compete for a title, compete everyday in ptactice vs. the best players in America, and his relationship with Washington will win out.
