C LeCharles Bentley (2001 Rimington Award & 2 time Pro Bowler)

Bentley training in Arizona but will participate in Cleveland Browns workouts in May

Browns center LeCharles Bentley will continue working out in Arizona "with the blessing of the Browns" despite the fact the team's off-season program began Monday in Berea.

"LeCharles will be staying in Arizona and continuing the program he's on out there," said his agent Jonathan Feinsod. "The Browns are fully on board with it."

Browns general manager Phil Savage did not immediately return an email, but coach Romeo Crennel said at the NFL Scouting Combine last month that he expects Bentley to participate in the organized team activities -- or voluntary spring practices -- that begin in May.

"LeCharles is doing phenomenal," said Feinsod. "I went to watch him work out in Arizona and he looks bionic. He'll come back and work with the Browns when he has to."

Bentley, 29, will continue his bid to return from a torn left patella tendon suffered in July of 2006. He also suffered a re-tear of the tendon and staph infection that required three additional surgeries. He attempted to come back last season, but remained on the physically unable to perform list for the entire year while he continued to strengthen the knee.

"Once the Browns see that LeCharles is LeCharles again, they'll be very pleased," said Feinsod. "He's fully committed to playing this season."

Savage holding out hope for Baxter, Bentley

It seems a 1,000-to-1 long shot Gary Baxter and LeCharles Bentley can still be the Browns' "Killer Bs," but there's a chance they'll at least be on the 2008 training camp field.

So says General Manager Phil Savage.

Of Bentley, Savage said he expects "that at some point in May he'll be back with us and hopefully on the field."

Whereas Baxter is in Berea taking part in team offseason training, Bentley is in Arizona working on his own.

"He's got a trainer there he likes working with," Savage said of the former Pro Bowl center. "He feels like he's made a lot of progress.

"He's gonna check back with us probably every three to four weeks during the offseason and hopefully get to a point after the draft once the OTAs (organized team activities) start in mid-May where he can come back and begin to learn the offense.

"He was in a lot of our meetings last year during training camp and all, so he's not totally unfamiliar with the offensive system."

Crennel said he has spoken with LeCharles Bentley. Crennel plans to visit Bentley in Arizona, where the injured center is working out. Crennel said he might send someone else from the Browns to check on Bentley, who according to Bentley's agent is making good progress. Bentley has not played since his left patellar tendon was torn on the first day of training camp in 2006.

Center LeCharles Bentley continues to work out in Phoenix, but the Browns have signed two veteran free-agent offensive linemen, Rex Hadnot and Seth McKinney. Their presence seems to indicate the Browns are not expecting Bentley to return.

Crennel optimistic about Bentley
UPDATE: 2:17 PM, Monday, May 12, 2008

CANTON TWP. LeCharles Bentley must clear one more hurdle to suit up for spring practice this week.

Browns Head Coach Romeo Crennel said the former Pro Bowl center was in New York to clarify an aspect of his recovery from an injury nightmare.

"Then he's gonna come here and let our guys look him over, and then he'll be available to go," Crennel said. "I talked to him about being here so that he can get started with us tomorrow. I don't know if that process will be completed by that time. He's supposed to call me back today."

The Browns are entering three weeks of what amounts to spring practice.

"(Bentley) feels good," Crennel said today at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Luncheon Club. "He says he feels better than he's felt in a long time.

"He's excited about the possibilities."

Bentley was signed as the centerpiece of the Browns 2006 free agency class, but he blew out a patellar tendon early in training camp. He missed the entire 2006 and '07 seasons.

Browns Bites
Home Friends What?s going to happen with Bentley?
By Dan Wyar | May 19th, 2008

A former Pro Bowler and former Ohio State Buckeye, LeCharles Bentley signed a six-year deal with the Cleveland Browns in 2006, but during training camp in Berea on July 27 of that summer, Bentley tore left patella tendon during a routine drill and was placed in injured reserve two days later. The Cleveland native and standout at St. Ignatius dreams of playing with his hometown Browns, or even stepping on the field again, seemed unlikely after missing all of 2006 and 2007.

After multiple knee surgeries, things started to look up as Bentley made the announcement last summer that he was ready to go, and according to his surgeon, Bentley was deemed healthy. But again, he didn?t see the field and the Browns decided to sign the guy that took Bentley?s starting job, Hank Fraley, to a muti-year contract.

Here's the latest with LeCharles Bentley. He needs to have his surgeon clear him to play, then he needs to pass the Browns' physical. He skipped the voluntary OTAs to continue to work on his knee with his personal trainer. From a practical view: Until Bentley is on the field taking part in practices with blocking and tackling, there's really not much to say about him.

Browns await word
on Bentley's health

CLEVELAND: Monday could be an important day in Browns' center LeCharles Bentley's comeback.

That's when Bentley is scheduled to undergo the team's physical, General Manager Phil Savage said Tuesday night. The prized free agent from the New Orleans Saints tore his patellar tendon in his first practice in full pads in July 2006 and complications from a staph infection resulted in four surgeries on his left knee.

''We're going to know probably by Monday evening, I would suspect, one way or the other in terms of what he's going to be capable of doing,'' Savage said after the Winners Influence Win Conference at the Ohio Theater.

''Romeo has talked to him a couple times and his agents have been in touch with us,'' Savage said.

Crennel said in his conversations with Bentley, the former Ohio State star seemed upbeat about his workouts in Phoenix and his level of participation.

Bentley's condition will be more clear on Monday
Jeff Schudel [email protected]
06/08/2008

No physical exam has been more greatly anticipated than the one LeCharles Bentley will undergo Monday at the Cleveland Clinic. Bentley has not played in a football game since 2005. If he passes his physical, he will be cleared for the Browns' three-day minicamp, which starts Tuesday.

The St. Ignatius High School product arrived in Cleveland in March of 2006 as the marquee free-agent signing following four years as a guard and center with the Saints. He was eager to play for his hometown team, but he never got the chance because his left patellar tendon tore in the first practice of training camp two years ago.

The patellar tendon attaches the front of the shin bone to the kneecap. A torn patellar is one of the most difficult injuries to overcome, particularly for a 350-pound offensive lineman who puts abnormal strain on his knees fending off pass rushers and driving forward while run blocking.

Bentley's situation had been more dicey than most because of a staph infection that was so severe doctors contemplated amputating Bentley's leg. He has had at least three operations to clean out the infection.
The relationship between the player and the team has become strained through the surgeries to clean out the staph. For the past two years, Bentley has worked out in Arizona with his own trainer, away from the Browns' trainers and medical staff.

Every player has to pass a physical before he can practice, but because he has been training so far from Berea, the Browns are more in the dark on Bentley than they are on injured players who have been rehabbing at the team complex.

"We have several tests he has to pass, not only for the protection of himself but for the protection of us as well," General Manager Phil Savage said Thursday during his weekly interview on WTAM-AM 1100. "We need to make sure everything is sturdy and secure before he actually gets out there. Most of that process will take place on Monday."

Bentley was to be the anchor of the Browns' offensive line, but, frankly, they have moved on without him, although he could start at right guard if any complications slow Ryan Tucker's fractured hip from healing. The contract Bentley signed in 2006 was for six years and $36 million. By mutual agreement, the contract was amended last year to make this the final year of the deal. Bentley can be an unrestricted free agent next winter - a stark contrast from his desire in the winter of 2006 to end his career with the Browns.

Bentley's last chance at hometown glory
Posted by Bill Livingston June 09, 2008

As a boy, LeCharles Bentley watched his hometown team win and lose epic games in a stadium that, like the team itself, would soon be gone.

He wasn't quite 10 when his favorite player, Eric Metcalf, hopscotched through the Bengals defense near their goal line on a Monday night, showing the nation moves it had not seen even from his father, ex-NFL star Terry Metcalf.

As a teenager, Bentley cheered as Metcalf ran back two punts for touchdowns in a game in 1993, leaving Steelers clutching and gasping in his wake.

Maybe Bentley still has a future with the Browns.

Maybe he has only his memories of when wearing the "orange hat" on the field in Cleveland was as good as it gets.

He took his team physical Monday, although the results were not disclosed.

Bentley has been working out with his own personal trainer in Arizona, which reflects the strained relationship between the offensive lineman and the Browns. He has spent the past two seasons unable to play. He tore his left patellar tendon on the first play of his first day at training camp on 2006, then battled complications from the surgery to fix it.

He has his signing bonus and his paychecks, amounting to $16 million in all from the Browns. He also has a shortened contract, which allows him to become a free agent after this season.

He has told friends he is ready to play. A center, he can also play guard. If healthy, he would not be a spare part so much as needed depth. Even if he plays, his season might amount to an audition for free-agent suitors. Many teams would love to have a former Pro Bowler who is adept at two positions.

Cleveland Browns | Bentley cleared, in uniform

Bentley cleared, in uniform

Zac Jackson, Staff Writer 06.10.2008

It took all of about two minutes for news to come out of the start of Browns minicamp Tuesday morning.
LeCharles Bentley was in uniform, and Browns General Manager Phil Savage said Bentley was medically cleared by the team on Monday night, then passed the running test that all players must pass before they participate in on-field practice work.
