And then there's center LeCharles Bentley.
Whispers inside the Browns' complex persist that Bentley's recovery from four knee surgeries is proceeding so well that he may be able to play at some point this season. Bentley is on the physically unable to perform list at least through six games, after which he could begin practicing with the team for the first time in 18 months.
Rehab sighting
Offensive lineman LeCharles Bentley was working with a trainer on his pass protection drops outside while the team practiced inside. Bentley, who tore a patellar tendon on the first full day of 2006 training camp, had a large brace on the knee.
Bentley began the year on the physically unable to perform list and is eligible to begin practicing next week. The Browns have a three-week window for him to return to practice, then another three-week window after he begins practicing to activate him or put him on the injured list for the season.
Injury report
Crennel didn?t sound optimistic when asked if offensive lineman LeCharles Bentley would begin practicing this week. He was eligible to come off the physically unable to perform list last week, but the Browns can wait another two weeks to put him on the practice field.
?We?re evaluating that. I?m not going to say I?m going to do that yet,? Crennel said. ?He?s rehabbing. He?s not ready yet. He?s made progress from August. If he continues to make progress, that improves his chances.?
Bentley to remain on PUP

Browns offensive lineman LeCharles Bentley will remain on the team's physically unable to perform list, the team announced Tuesday.
The move means he's ineligible to practice with the team or play for the remainder of the 2007 season. It delays the comeback hopes of the Cleveland native, who was hoping to return to the active roster and make his debut as a Brown this season.
New Bentley deal
The Browns and center LeCharles Bentley have agreed to a one-year contract for 2008 that replaces the six-year, $36 million deal he signed as a free agent in 2006.
Profootballtalk.com reported the deal Sunday, and a team source confirmed the restructuring Monday. The source said the deal was reached in the fall.
According to profootballtalk.com, under the new contract Bentley is slated to earn a base salary of $605,000 in 2008. He could reach three $1 million incentives if he plays enough.
The move reduces the team?s financial risk, and in return the Browns agreed to let Bentley become a free agent after the season.
The deal also removes the contract from the team?s salary cap by the end of 2008. Bentley has missed two years after tearing his patellar tendon in training camp in July 2006. A staph infection invaded the knee, and he has yet to play a snap for his hometown team.

The Browns have shortened center LeCharles Bentley's contract by three years and he can now become an unrestricted free agent after the 2008 season, according to NFL Players Association records.
The restructured deal will pay Bentley the NFL minimum for his position ($605,000) next season, but includes incentives that can earn him the $4 million he was due to make in base salary and roster bonus.
The new deal protects the Browns from having to pay Bentley $4 million in the event he can't play, yet it allows him to make up the money if he's healthy.
Bentley, the St. Ignatius product and former Ohio State star, has missed his first two seasons with the Browns after suffering a torn patella tendon in training camp of 2006 and complications from a re-tear and staph infection that required three additional surgeries.
He hoped to come back this season, but was never activated off the physically unable to perform list. He's currently rehabbing in Arizona.
"He's doing great," said his agent, Jonathan Feinsod. "He's ready to go."
Feinsod said Bentley is confident he'll be able to return to a starting role with the Browns next season. He'll receive $1 million bonuses after playing eight games, 12 games and 14 games.
Extra points
Crennel said he expects offensive lineman LeCharles Bentley to participate in the offseason program and be ready for minicamp and training camp. Bentley hasn?t played for the Browns since signing as a free agent in 2006. He suffered a torn patellar tendon and had three additional surgeries after a staph infection invaded the knee.
