C.J. Barnett (Director of Player Development)

Its not something you can just "get" at this point in his career. You have 5 years to play 4. If you havent played 4 at the end of your 5 due to some injury then you may apply, and may be granted a 6th year.

Barnett profile

Barnett should be eligible for a medical redshirt.
He is a sophomore in class and eligibility i.e. did not redshirt his freshman year (2009).

Leroy is correct. It is an application that he can make later, or even receive strong assurances (high probability) that he'll get one down the road, but until that application is approved later, he only has 2.5 years left.

This is really unfortunate. I think his hit on Hankerson (sp?) made a substantial difference yesterday. at least one pick came from recievers bobbling the ball, imo fearing the hit that was coming. That hit set the tone for the game and the physicality we played with. Best of luck CJ! Pulling for you!

It sucks that this happened, but at least he should be able to get an extra year out of it. If he had gotten injured in a week or two that wouldn't be an option. Now we know what he can do and he should have 3 more years to show it.

Yeah he'll be able to redshirt no problem in that regard since he didn't use it last year. Really unfortunate for any player to have to go through this type of injury though

Barnett out at least a week, MRI upcoming

Starting strong safety C.J. Barnett will miss at least a week and likely more than that with a right knee injury suffered Saturday against Miami, according to team insiders.

The early indication is the injury does not involve the ACL, which could be a season-ending injury, but rather, two other ligaments, the PCL and MCL.

Barnett is going to have an MRI soon, and nothing definitive will be known until those results are analyzed.

For comparison's sake, defensive end Nathan Williams suffered an MCL sprain on Aug. 14 and returned for the Miami game four weeks later.

Barnett, a sophomore, had a good game Saturday in his second career start, making three tackles and breaking up a pass that Williams intercepted. He won the job in fall camp.
