C.J. Barnett (Director of Player Development)

If CJ plays well enough to lock up the starting SS spot, they may as well rename it the "Thunderbolt" position. And, if his HS rep (plays like K. Coleman, but better in coverage) shows true, we will have two athletic, hard-nosed safeties patrolling the middle secondary. With Hines at FS, and Moeller at Star, there will be plenty of support for the corners on passing downs.

I don't know what they put in the water north of Dayton, but they produce some damn fine defensive backs. Light 'em up, CJ!

TRESSEL ON BARNETT ... When Ohio State released its depth chart last week many were surprised that C.J. Barnett was named as the starter at strong safety, despite running behind Orhian Johnson during all of the spring and most of fall camp.

Barnett started in the jersey scrimmage while Johnson sat out with a calf injury. When the announcement came that Barnett had won the job, most wanted to know if he received the nod because of his play, or because Johnson missed valuable time at the end of camp?

"I think it was a little of both," Tressel said. "Just like anything else, if you get the opportunities and you have a chance to get more reps and things like that and you impress ... C.J. has been very impressive. That doesn't mean Orhian is not in the thick of a battle. But like anything else, if one guy is in there doing the work and he's getting better and better, and the other unfortunately missed ... I'm guessing it makes it more difficult.

"But good competition will continue at that position.

Practice reports from one observer said he was getting kinda run over at times, but would bring down the tackler. They also mentioned he wasn't particularly physical.

Take it for what it's worth, if the staff likes him that's good enough for me. If OJ is not back for Miami, CJ will be going up against some good/big receivers so hopefully the live game reps from Marshall will be beneficial.

CJ has made the transition from corner to safety correct? I'm anxious to see him hitting out there. He has about the same build as Coleman (maybe a little taller and leaner though). But reports of him getting pushed back are concerning. Hopefully, once the game juices are flowing, he'll start blasting people back there. (Well, that is if anyone from Marshall gets past Cam and company up front :).)

It seems like we are using our safties more and more for coverage and the star position more and more for run support. I am guessing the move for CJ has a lot to do with his ability to cover. With all the spread offenses I think you have to have great cover guys. I think our defensive stats and performance speaks for itself and if CJ is the new starter I am sure he earned it. Replacing both starting safeties is the biggest concern I have for this year I hope he plays lights out. Those back 5 should feed off that great D line. Go Bucks

I think too much is being made of 1 scrimmage. Not to mention, many players have been "Boomed" before. CJ has always been a physical player, so I'm not really concerned yet. Not to mention that OJ was a high school QB that is still fairly lean. I'm not sure he would have a physical advantage over CJ. Either way, can't wait to see him on the field against Marshall.

played with tons of energy, but he often looked lost out there to me.

Lost is strong, but he was taking some bad angles in run support. I thought his coverage was solid and seemed to bracket his man well. I think it's safe to say his coverage is a strength, run support and diagnosing the run might not be. I'd rather have the coverage support next week....

From south stands, he looked confused pre snap. He wasn't put into many (if any) high pressure situations from Marshall's passing game. It was interesting that he played pretty much the entire game and that OJ didn't get in at all. CJ needs to spend a lot of time between now and Saturday going over his assignments because he will be tested by Miami's passing game.
