C Greg Oden (All B1G, All-American, Defensive Player of the Year, Butler Assistant Coach)

Dad is presumably quoted in the Star article as saying Greg can always finish his education in the off season. Of course a lot of athletes do so, maybe even by age 35 or so. Assuming he would want to finish at tOSU or any other traditionally scheduled school, let's see.

The NBA starts practice and play during Fall Quarter. It plays all Winter Quarter. It plays a chunk of Spring Quarter. That leaves Summer. He would presumably have three quarters under his belt by this June, so he would also presumably need 9 more (Correct?) and would need to carry a full load to accomplish that. Now then, a question would be whether he chose to join a US National team one or more times... that would be Summer Quarter. Or any other unique opportunity that is summer based.

So, unless he goes the University of Phoenix Internet type route, he would be looking at maybe 10 or 11 more years to finally have a degree and a level of confidence that he has enough school smarts to manage his own affluent affairs rather than have to rely on others for trustworthy guidance and decision making. That's not impossible. He can count his multimillion dollars frequently to remind himself that giving up the unique college experience that he presumably was enjoying was worth it.

I can't say it wasn't. Everybody says, what would you do if made such an offer at the end of your frosh year. I enjoyed college immensely and look back on those days with fondness. I guess if I thought I might lose a golden opportunity because of injury, I would take it. But, of course, this is complicated by the existence of catastrophic insurance for athletes...as high as ten million if reports are correct. I can live like a king for a hundred million or so, but I could live pretty good for ten mill, (non-taxable) of course. If he goes in fact, I hope he doesn't look back in regret a few years from now. "You can't go home again" as they say. He will never be able to regain the fun he is presumably now enjoying, if he really is.

Godspeed Greg Oden. Life is filled with forks in the road, and you usually have to take one.

Go Bucks! :ohwell:

I really hate reading the quotes from people like Bill Walton and Greg's old HS coach taking thinly veiled shots at Matta and the OSU coaching staff for the way Greg Oden was used in the offense this season.

I think what Walton and Greg's old coach forget is that Thad Matta's job as the Ohio State basketball coach is to win basketball games. What his job is not, is to showcase Greg Oden's individual talents all game so that he can be a #1 pick and be a media darling.

If Ohio State finished 26-10 and got knocked out of the tournament in the second round I think some of these gripes about the use of Oden would be valid. But the fact remains the team went 35-4 and played in the National Championship game. They were a very successful team.

It just seems to me that people being vocal with this line of thinking are seriously missing the point.

Sure there were times when I wished Greg would've been more involved in the offense, but the results of the team speak for themselves in that regard.

Let me be the first to say, I'm going to wait and see how it all plays out. Seriously, I am. I haven't heard Greg Oden say "I'm declaring for the NBA" and until then, I'm going to assume Greg Oden has not declared for the NBA.

Also I would put a little more validity into those comments if they were made by his mother.

I agree... not only has Greg himself not declared for the draft, but he also hasn't hired an agent yet, leaving open the possibility he will return.

I first read some of your responses about the three declaring for the draft and assumed they were gone. But to be honest, after reading the article, I am not 100% sure they are leaving until I hear it from them.

I have said it before, I respect either decision and have no desire for them to stay or go because I just want what is best for them. But, until Oden hires an agent, and until the three of them verbally declare, I will wait it out. Best of luck to everyone involved.

Conley's father: No decisions have been made regarding NBA (11:36 a.m.)

Ohio State trio could enter draft to evaluate options
Saturday, April 14, 2007 11:36 AM
By Bob Baptist

Mike Conley Sr. said today that he is "100 percent confident" that Greg Oden, Mike Conley Jr. and Daequan Cook have not decided whether to leave Ohio State for the NBA, but he indicated that all three freshmen could at least enter the draft to give themselves more time to assess their status.

"To me, the decision at this point is not necessarily 'Do I want to go pro' as much as 'Do I want to put my name in and buy myself some more time to decide?' " said Conley Sr., the father of Mike Jr. and the would-be agent for all three players should they decide to stay in the draft.

College underclassmen have until April 29 to enter the draft and until June 18 to withdraw. The draft is June 28.

The Indianapolis Star reported today that Oden's father, Greg Sr., said his son would enter the draft, in which he is the presumptive No.1 pick. The story did not say, however, whether Greg Sr., who lives in Buffalo, was told that by his son or how else he came by the information.

Conley Sr. questioned the veracity of the comment.

"Greg's dad truly believes Greg Oden needs to go pro; that's a fact. Greg has not talked to (his mother) Zoe about what he wants to do; that's a fact," Conley Sr. said.

continued......

Everybody also needs to keep in mind that if they enter the NBA draft and don't hire an agent, they have essentially bought 2 more months of time to think about it. Since they could withdraw their names by June 18th if they decide to stay.

It would also relieve the media pressure, which will be intense between now and April 29th, unless they do enter their names in the draft.

I'm not looking at things with scarlet glasses, I'm just pointing out that possibility. Personally, I think giving themselves the extra time to think about it is the wise move at this point.

Also, although the comments of Greg's dad may not have been prudent, we need to be careful how we discuss the family member of a player on these boards.

If Greg Oden stays it will not be about improving as BBall player it will be about maturing as a person. The college game is not about the Center position. The competion(lack of quality big men), oficiating, and defenses are totally different then the NBA. If he is to improve Baketball wise he needs to be in the NBA. If he was from a well to do family he might stay, but when a 19 year old is seen as a the breadwinner for his family..what choice does he have. Yes he might look back later and wish he stayed but the reality is his family's needs are in the hear and now. Not to mention his "friends" and their "needs(desires)".

DAMN LoKyBuckeye for posting this. I was all prepared for life without and then you go and drop this one on me. Maybe I shouldn't have overreacted to comments made by "Greg Oden, Sr." when there isn't a "Greg Oden, Jr." on our team. The fact that "Sr" doesn't have a "Jr" really speaks volumes about how close he is to this situation. Is this guy a clone of Bobby Boucher's daddy in "The Waterboy" or what?
