Dad is presumably quoted in the Star article as saying Greg can always finish his education in the off season. Of course a lot of athletes do so, maybe even by age 35 or so. Assuming he would want to finish at tOSU or any other traditionally scheduled school, let's see.
The NBA starts practice and play during Fall Quarter. It plays all Winter Quarter. It plays a chunk of Spring Quarter. That leaves Summer. He would presumably have three quarters under his belt by this June, so he would also presumably need 9 more (Correct?) and would need to carry a full load to accomplish that. Now then, a question would be whether he chose to join a US National team one or more times... that would be Summer Quarter. Or any other unique opportunity that is summer based.
So, unless he goes the University of Phoenix Internet type route, he would be looking at maybe 10 or 11 more years to finally have a degree and a level of confidence that he has enough school smarts to manage his own affluent affairs rather than have to rely on others for trustworthy guidance and decision making. That's not impossible. He can count his multimillion dollars frequently to remind himself that giving up the unique college experience that he presumably was enjoying was worth it.
I can't say it wasn't. Everybody says, what would you do if made such an offer at the end of your frosh year. I enjoyed college immensely and look back on those days with fondness. I guess if I thought I might lose a golden opportunity because of injury, I would take it. But, of course, this is complicated by the existence of catastrophic insurance for athletes...as high as ten million if reports are correct. I can live like a king for a hundred million or so, but I could live pretty good for ten mill, (non-taxable) of course. If he goes in fact, I hope he doesn't look back in regret a few years from now. "You can't go home again" as they say. He will never be able to regain the fun he is presumably now enjoying, if he really is.
Godspeed Greg Oden. Life is filled with forks in the road, and you usually have to take one.
Go Bucks! :ohwell:
