C Byron 'B.J.' Mullens (Levanga Hokkaido Sapporo - Japan)

Holy Cripe! In the NBADraft article someone attached a few posts ago, four of the top ten (two in the top five and two in the 'honorable mention') are Buckeyes.

You really got to hand it to the OSU staff, being able to work all these studs into a TEAM.

I dont know about Lighty and turner but I am extremely pumped about BJ and Buford. Buford's a good guy, good teammate, athletic, a shooter AND a dunker, etc. Needs to work on his D but we are gonna love him. And BJ? Well, he's all that. What can you say?

the Spartans up here are already telling me, "Wait till Basketball season, we'll get you then." I'm hoping we take 'em then, too.

I hope he's able get to the free throw line regularly
I just hope that the guy he is guarding does not go to the free throw line very often. I also have been hearing that BJ is a nice little 15' jump shot. Now whether that is true or not I do not know. I would be interested in knowing how well he shot free throws during his senior season at Canal Winchester.

No to curb your enthusiasm but that NBA Draft board was BIG 10 prospects only!

However, on the other hand, I have seen some mock drafts for underclassmen and Buford is in the top 10 and I have even seen him at #5. I have not seen any other Ohio State players other than BJ and Buford ranked.

Any idea on what kind of defensive effort Mullens has?

The only thing I have to go on is the All-star games he played in during the break between his Junior and Senior year and after his Senior BBall season had ended. These type events obviously do not give a true representation of a players passion to play defense. His effort was less than that of Greg Oden in the same events, though to be fair, GO gave more effort defensively in those games than anyone I've ever seen in all-star games.

Athletically he has the ability to be a very good defender, and I read where big Z has a passion for defense, and we all know that Dallas goes hard on the defensive end, couple those two's desire to defend rubbing off with the emphasis that Matta puts on defense and I think BJ will develop into a fine defender as the year goes on.

Just my opinion, but Mullens gave good effort on the defensive end but due to his size, picked up some bad habits and will need to realize the importance of playing defense every trip down the court.......I think this is an area he could possibly struggle with early in the season..........fans need to be patient and not expect him to dominate from the get go.....he is not Oden.

Ok, ummmm how did he play?
I only think that there was one or two posters who went to the scrimmage and so you will have to wait on their reports. However, it is probably just like football you really can't tell much from an intrasquad scrimmage.

My big concern with BJ and his defense when it comes to the college game will be how he adjusts to the officiating and how the officiating will adjust to him. It's also like Junkie says that he is going to have to learn to play hard every time down the court. He certainly has the size and mobility to be a defensive presence around the basket. However, it will take some time for him to adjust.
