C Byron 'B.J.' Mullens (Levanga Hokkaido Sapporo - Japan)

Boost Mobile Elite 24 Hoops Classic Report

draft express
B.J. Mullens - 7'0" C - Committed to Ohio State

The future Buckeye may have been the most impressive player at the Elite 24. Mullens fully exhibited his freakish athleticism with a flurry of put backs and dunks, including a one handed alley-oop that was caught a good two feet about the rim.

i really hope that the alley oop that i and the draft express referenced will be youtubed. it was absolutely amazing.

Playing a Big Role

risemag
Most basketball all-star games and showcases are dominated by guards. This year?s Elite 24 was no different. Whether it was Evans, Stephenson, Jennings or Campbell Hall?s (North Hollywood, Calif.) Jrue Holiday, the backcourt was the source of most of the game?s excitement and highlight-reel plays.

But if it wasn?t for the big men grabbing rebounds and firing outlet passes, some of those plays would never happen.

For the Skip to my Lou Squad, B.J. Mullens of Canal Winchester (Canal Winchester, Ohio) was that big man. The Ohio State-bound center finished with 18 points on 9-of-10 shooting, even if he wasn?t looking to light up the scoreboard.

?I didn?t come to New York looking to score,? Mullens said. ?I came to New York to relax and it was an honor to be named one of the Elite 24 players.?

Elite 24 Player Breakdown

slam online
B.J. Mullens, 7-1 center, Canal Winchester (OH), 2008, committed to Ohio State: Mullens’ speed and hops paid off very well for the big fella, as he converted passes in transition for several powerful flushes. Unmatched as an athlete for a post player, his one-hand reverse follow-up bang was easily one of the game’s most memorable moments.

believe the hype, fellas. he is that good. as 7-footers go, they generally don't manage their height until they are in their 20s. bj is waaaaaaay ahead of the curve. it's not even close. a 7'1" guy is not supposed to be able to take the ball from his left hand and, mid-air, go between his legs for a right-handed dunk. he's not supposed to leap like a 6'5" forward. he's not supposed to have a 2-guard's shooting form. he's not supposed to run the court like a guard. there are so many things he's not supposed to do. he does them all. he WILL make a stronger offensive impact than oden did. mark it down.

the top player in ohio for 2008 plays southeast of columbus. no offense to buford and roe... and i LOVE buford's game. you just can't teach bj's marriage of height and skills.

sorry for the run of monopolizing posts, but...

i'm sitting here reading what i've posted and thinking about what i saw on saturday. i'm giddy. i mean this in the best possible way, but most of you guys have no idea how good bj is and could be (again, by no means an insult). playing in the mid-state league will never show off his complete range of abilities. i'm not surprised that bj sometimes takes plays off. he needs to be challenged. that's why i think that he's much better than most realize. in college, he'll receive the challenge, and he'll show us all why he makes a clear case to be (possibly) the best player in the 2008 class.

yes, i wear scarlet lenses. even when i take them off, i see a player that may very well be the best in the nation by the time that he shirts up for the bucks. maybe not now... but then.

get ready, guys.

according to winchesterbuck (he's "in" with mullens) on bucknuts' free bball forum, bj's vertical is 35" and standing reach is 9'2".

oden's pre-draft standing vertical was 32" and his max vertical was 2 inches greater (9'4" reach). remember, that vertical is after being trained by those who really know how to get the most out of athletes, which is certainly not a comment about those who are currently assisting bj.

bj is one bad dude. :yow1:

No sense in crying over spilled milk, but the addition of Babbitt could have made the team one for the ages.
i agree; however, i think the team will be at a point (in 2008) where there could be too much talent. i know some will claim that that is an absurd statement, but i think that the team will have more than enough out there to battle O(and dominate) absolutely anyone. what will hurt the most is not having his 3-point contributions... not his size. diebler and buford will be absolutely deadly from deep. i would like to see one more sharpshooter. if kosta stays, the team will have it.

as for beyond 2008, babbitt would have been great for the program.

Putting on a show at Rucker Park

fox sports
Of course, any kind of setting like this is a haven for guards and high-flying wings (USC commit Demar DeRozan and Indiana commit Devin Ebanks abused the rims on the regular), but what about the bigs? While guys like 7-2 Sudan product John Riek struggled in the lightning-fast atmosphere, someone like B.J. Mullens (7-1 Ohio State commit) and Samardo Samuels (diesel 6-9 Louisville commit) thrived. Mullens can run the floor and shoot like a guard, so he had no problems keeping up, and Samuels is fast enough and scary enough that no one wants to get bowled over when hes on the loose. Mullens (18 pts) brought the house down in the second half when he reached waaaay back and caught a sick alley oop from EZ Pass that got the biggest crowd reaction of the night, getting the park on the verge of running onto the court. Samuels (21 pts) caught a few dunks himself, mostly of the power variety after sending some defender flying off of him.

yep, the place went absolutely crazy. i can't wait to see it again.
