Seriously, I think g-lee has some good points. Especially the part about rep being fun. Why does everyone take it so damn seriously?
It has been amusing to watch Teddy yo-yo today, though. Worse than my aunt on Jenny Craig...

I don't retaliate ding-for-ding. If you had made a comment and signed it, I may have PM'd you about it instead (especially when it was a post where I had made no opinionated comment at all, and thus really was a post that had no valid reason for being dinged). From what I can see, you were getting a little big for your britches once you got a ton of rep points built up (belittling seed702 because he wasn't sure on how to edit his post, etc.), when you didn't even know a center-sneak is illegal.
When you choose to walk through a mine field, expect to get blown up...

Stop whining, I just got into the top 50, and have about half as many posts as you in 3x the time... As has been pointed out, there are basically 2 ways to get repped. Intelligent well thought out posts, with facts and a purpose, and hilarious one liners. The post I have recieved by far the most rep for was a pretty lame one liner, but I am not giving it back!!!!
I don't really give a rats poop about it, but it needs to be realized that if you contribute the rep will come. Everyone has thier own way of contributing, some require more time to accumulate rep than others (or maybe spewing hot air just doesn't work). Once everyone understands that the rep system is %30 substance and %70 percent fun...
and yes, I can understand there would be some hesitence from the top 10-20 or so ranking repsters due to not overinflating or pounding someones rep into the dirt. Once the season and recruiting are over and there is some more time to code I would love to see the feature of being able to control how much positive or negative rep one is doling out, but that is the future...
If you think that's whining you ain't seen nothing yet. I'm afraid my previous posts have labelled me as being concerned about my own rep...wrong. I could frankly care because about 75% that I have gotten is all in fun. Earning rep is not the point of being a member here, fun conversation is. I challenge you to ever find a rep whine out of me other than about a few weeks into my journey when I dropped tha ball. Other than that I'm just here to have a good time and so are about 95% of evryone else.

Of 4829 BP member listings how many are actually "in the red?"
Answer (as of this moment) 222.
Which means that less than 5% of the BP inmate population has anything other than positive rep.
Personal interpretation of this data
1 - people like to give credit for good works or solidly expressed views.
2 - It is harder to get slapped on BP than it is to get praised. We have a warm and for the most part welcoming community - at least that's what the rep system data actually tells me. As The Man noted above, it can sometimes seem intimidating at first, but the truth is that there is a far higher acceptance of variance of views here than you might find at your common or garden fan board.
3 - If your rep is red and you do not like it, I think that should be an easy matter to fix, like all wounds it'll heal itself in time and with your good contributions.
As for SIMV's point about judging posts by content, not by rep medals - well I agree wholeheartedly. It would be interesting to have the option to not display those medals for a week or so - as in the manner you can enable or disable the sig files via your User CP.
And last but not least, it is meant to be a fun thing, not a measure of any individual as a person.

LOUD NOISES!!! I can't believe some people come on here and whine about getting dinged. Good grief, there is a very simple solution to it...don't do or say stupid things. When I was new to the board, I made a statement in a forum (can't remember which one), and Mili came back with sort of a smart ass comment, which is something we all do sometimes. Well, I didn't really know how things work around here, so I annonymously dinged him. He justifiably dinged me back and I learned my lesson. Eventually I dug myself out of the red. Posting on a message board takes a certain amount of restraint, and some people (I'm looking at you TG05) need to exercise that. To have almost 2000 posts since September is excessive. Sometimes just sit back and read... there is no need to reply to every single thread and/or comment made on the board. Jumping on people for not knowing all the functionalities of the board is out of line, and you are justifiably back in the red after making some nice progress. Just cool it a little and everything will be fine. End of rant.

Well it looks like this thread has turned to the discussion of the Reputation System. Seems like this is always a point of interest when we get to talking about the pros and cons of BuckeyePlanet.
Most of the regulars know this, but I'll cover it for the newer folks and lurkers.
1) The system is supposed to be anonymous so that you can voice your honest feelings when giving positive or negative Rep. Many choose to 'sign' their rep comments and in fact many members feel this should be a requirement of the system. This isn't required and the Admins will NOT tell you who is giving the rep comments. There is one reason and one reason ONLY that the admins have access to the reputation comments and that is to correct abusive behavior. When someone crosses the line and threatens and/or uses abusive language we need the ability to determine/confirm what happened and who is guilty. This isn't treated lightly so don't go running to the admins everytime someone says your post sucks. However, if someone is harassing you, or threatening you, by all means contact the admins. That is the safeguard we have in place.
2) IMHO the rep system is more headache than it's worth. Granted, this is only a personal opinion. I see it as a headache because it creates (probably) the most amount of needless work for the administrators. Obviously a PITA for the Admins and Senior Mods, but of no further consequence for the membership in general. That's why I'm not a big fan, but I do see (in general) it's benefits. People new to BP go off the deep end regarding the rep system for some reason. We field comments and concerns all the time ... "why didn't poster X sign that ding?" ... "my post didn't warrent a ding" ... etc. I suppose that this is partially due to the system being SO new to some folks. When you only have 5-10 rep comments, each and every one seems to take on an elevated significance. The key isn't to worry about individual comments, but to focus on the general trend of comments you receive. If the majority are positive, then you're probably fitting in well at BP. If negative, then you may want to question your posting style or even attitude on the board. If they are ALL negative, then you may want to consider another internet home.
Regardless of my personal opinion the reputation system is here to stay. Why? Because Clarity (and the majority of members) want it to stay. It IS an effective indicator of a member's perceived reputation at BP. As shown in previous posts, it can be an effective tool in creating change in posting patterns/behavior. Basically, it's another system of feedback. Information you can use to become a better poster. At the worst (and the best argument for keeping the rep system instead of scrapping it) you may turn the reputation system off. If it bothers you too much, simply turn it off. Problem solved.

6) Don't take this all too seriously. Everyone gets good and bad feedback. We all have good and bad days. If the fedback is helpful to you then great. If it isn't, then turn the system off. That is the reason for points 3, 4, and 5. Don't like the comments you're receiving? Turn the system off or learn from the feedback, but don't go complaining about it.
I (like many others) find it hard to give a rep comment for 'just' an above average post. At the moment I tend to save them for times when someone has obviously put a lot of time and effort into something here at BP. Hopefully the rep system will get altered in the future to allow for partial points to be awarded.

Why keep coming back? Not being an ass (or any moreso than usual), just genuinely curious. You don't like it, it's full of sheeple, no one but you and other neg rep people say anything original. So why load it up? I'm having some fun with it, but understand it's good natured. I fully appreciate BP can't work for everyone.
Never really understood that, so as long as I have one of you cornered, I'll get what info out of you I can.

Actually, after reviewing your rep and posts, I'm not exactly sure where you've had a bad experience. You've got more positive than negative, most of your posts are salient and well received, certainly topical. So what's the issue?
clarity like i stated in my post its free, and us neg rep people are just as much of a buckeye lover as the rest. We just don't jump on the pile and say things to make the respected bunch like us. I didn't say i had a bad experience just putting my 2 cents in the can. The pecking order is well established is all I'm saying. It just seems that posters respond but don't say much or say the same-thing as previous posters.

maybe I'm in the "elite" group, but I post things all of the time that are the opposite of what grad, bkb or jimotis think. I get lit up from time to time, but that is b/c my argument is sometimes faulty.
when an unusual viewpoint is just thrown out with nothing to back it up, it usually gets assaulted. When it is backed up, it is respected. This goes for fans of opposing teams as well, who offer up the ultimate "unpopular" viewpoint.

ps i i rep people for three reasons. a good find (article link etc). a question i ask they answer. if we have an argument/discussion and they make a point and back it up.
