BuckeyePlanet Discussion - All views welcome

It's interesting to me that so many people are in favor of restricting the open discussion forum to members. Like I said, I wasn't really decided on the issue when it was thrown out there, as I think the social aspect of this site is part of what makes it unique and special among online communities. It just seems to be the easiest way to make sure BP remains, first and foremost, focused on tOSU athletics, with the social aspect being secondary.

Oh, I did want to say, the Open D to members only idea would be a good one. A lot of the stuff that goes on in there is "inside joke" stuff, that from teh outside may turn people off.
I understand your point, but that is what make the "OD" fun (somehow that acronym seems fortelling ). It's the inside jokes and ribbing that makes this place seem more like a family.

edit; Oh, look I have more v$$$....

off to the bookie!!!!

First off, great recommendations by everyone. This a a very good discussion.

I think making Open Discussion "members only" is a great idea. Also, I was totally unaware that the language filter was non-functional.

I guess one of my main questions is if mods. and administrators are held accountable for their actions? I am aware that most of this may take place behind closed doors but to the rest of us not privy to that information it's tough to know. I mean it's "follow the leader" on here. What we see Admins. and mods. posting is what we deem to be acceptable and if we see those "in charge" typing racy or "colorful" posts, we expect that is acceptable.

I totally agree that the "Exclusivity" that this site purveys in regards to new posters is concerning. It's just a "pile on" mentality. Yeah, I've ripped tg05 when he's deserved it but I've also repped him a ton for taking it like a sport. I think he's more than taken his freshman hazing on here.

Same with donnyjr, I know he posted some really dumb stuff on here just as I have but he was piled on totally unnecessarily. Someone sees a "prominent" poster rip into him and then everyone else just piles on. That needs to stop in my opinion.

I'm sure there is more but I can't think of it as of now, maybe more later.

I suppose there is some group of people who will not join the site on account of not being able to see the Open D discussions.... Hard to say... I know a lot of people enjoy the Open D - poli board - stuff and participate mainly in those sections... would they have joined if they didn't know those opportunities existed here?

I'm not sure how anyone who hasn't been around for a while could make any sense of that place at all, anyway.

So what? Such is life. For a while, I'd see references to things I didn't get. I'd simply say "huh" and move along. After I'd see the same things several times, I'd either have caught on by then, or, if I still didn't get it, I'd use the wonderful search feature and do (gasp) a little research. It's not that hard. Like LoKy asked earlier, "Why can't everyone do that?"

I happen to enjoy doing research and figuring stuff out, (kinda like solving puzzles!), but I guess many people do not and never will. So be it. They always have the option to investigate, though, so they have, in my mind, no right to whine about being excluded from "inside jokes."

Maybe, Maybe not.

I do think it needs to be Buckeyes first though.

Plus, who is going to come here just to read the OD board and have a snack?

When I got here, Thump... to BP... It was made clear to me that a non-mod had just as much authority over how this forum was to be as did a mod... Somewhere along the way, people started relying on the mods for things they used to do themselves, maybe? I don't know. I mean, I recall getting blasted by everyone from Dihard to FKA (EDIT: And AKAKBUCK) for the way I came to the board. Mods and non-mods alike. Frankly, I didn't even really notice who was who until I got in to a scrap with BrutuS once and realized he was a Mod.

Not everyone will chill like Peach and learn the board regs personalities first, so when they just chime in and clearly don't get it, it's not too hard just to say, "No worries, we've got a history here" or somehting like that.... Hell, we joke about post count, but that should be an indicator... I've said over 7000 things here... That should be some indication that you people might have some idea about what I say to Kbuck, and whether I'm being serious or not.
