One of these days my nose is going to fall off because of all the coke (acola) you make me blow out of it.

I am not sure what that is supposed to mean, but you have a ton of posts and rep, so.

Of our mods, like of our users, we represent a wide range of approaches, tact, perspectives, voices, use of the language and vision of what BP should be. There's no accident there.

I intend to increase the mod ranks shortly. I'm still a bit unclear by how many. Could be 5, could be 10, could be 20. I don't really know. I don't have a 'cap' for how many mods we should have, because mods (like admins) are users who try to represent the site as best as possible. The more we have, the more like advocates for the user base they are, and the less like authoritative 'police'. That's what I'm shooting for there. Not looking for 'control', but rather for representation.

For some reason just thought of something off the wall (or maybe not that off the wall). Just hang with me for a moment, since it has been awhile since I was a newbie. What are the actual duties of the mods? Maybe I am just too lazy to go search to see if it is outlined somewhere. But adding 5-20 more? Or maybe because the site is growing so large, the tasks so many that each mod is being overburden with questions, ideas, tasks & general babysitting.

My business background starts screaming at me to specialize and delegate tasks and missions. We are just talking about newbies getting drilled at the beginning since they didn't know. Maybe if we have designated greeters that when someone becomes a member they are given a list of 3-5 posters that they can PM to ask questions regarding anything. Of course I have no clue how much time the current mods/admins spend on this already and how many do you really need. But that is just an example that probable has already been thought of but I am just not privy to those discussions because I never thought to ask before.

Of course this could be blown out of the water by the limitations of the software but just throwing out ideas.

I admit it, I'm a one trick pony, but it keeps getting me rep points and, let's face it, that's what counts.

I'm not going to offer up any ideas for how to make some things better. ( I don't think I've been here long enough to do that) But I think you guys have made one hell of a site here that I'm very proud to now be a member of.

Sometimes new blood can very well bring up ideas that are outside of the box. Because once you are inside the box for a period of time it is very difficult to get out of it.

Now of course if your ideas are crap we will just ding you

Where is that sarcasm font again?

Adding mods is less about the task of policing, and the time and effort it takes, and more about expanding the moderative role into user advocacy and representation. "Newbs" see and recognize mods as authority, the more we have who represent the site properly in their own postings (does *not* mean they can't have fun or get rowdy, but there's a time and place), the better and faster I think we translate our expectations to new folk.

Believe it or not, but there are no defined duties. I am cruel in that sense, in that I've made a habit of plugging people in, and largely leaving them to their own devices (and discussions with peers) in terms of how and what they are to do. My interest is always finding the right people, and then having them define for themselves what and how much to take on. I know it's backwards, and really can't work under 'normal' circumstances, but then BP isn't supposed to be normal anyway.

On BP, all a mod is, is a user with a little more control over the content of the site, and a representative of its interests. When you approach it like that, there's really no limit to the number you can and should have.

Senior mods and admins are a bit different.

Question Clarity, what is the order of power after you if any?

If we can't pm you about an issue b/c you're unavailable or anything, who should we go to next?

Is it 3yards, osugrad21, vrbryant, Audioslave, etc...

Well, vrbryant and longwoodbuck always have direct access to me. So even if I'm not able to be online, word can get through that way.

But certainly on site related affairs, osugrad21, 3yardsandacloud, lordjeffbuck and audioslave are all entirely appropriate points of contact.

I think this is a good idea. As I stated earlier that it is quite a daunting task to figure this site out in short order. I did a lot of surfing around the site to try and figure it out. Maybe a sticky with an outline of the features. Everyone list something that should be in the outline for the "noobs" and then one person to put it all in a post. That way one person doesn't have to spend all day thinking about what to put in the outline. (took me 2 months to figure out how to dole out rep. not that mine matters much)

Of course this small suggestion is only related to "noobs" and not the racial/ethnical/sexual orientation comments, and I apologize if there is an outline for noobs that I have missed somewhere.

Edit: Grr..tried to quote Piney and messed it up. Quote at top is an earlier post from Piney lol and yet now it's working /shrug

I always forget about Jo since I rarely see her on here.

She tries to check in regularly, but rarely posts. She's a dirty lurker.

Vince, for all his outrageousness and intentional challenges to people's perceptions and beliefs, is behind it all a deepy rational and logical person, and can always be trusted (as long as he's sober, the drunk) to put the right hat on when approached in a serious capacity.

I think that when somebody has an issue with a moderator, it should normally be addressed via PM's.

To me, calling out a mod's actions by posting critical comments is somewhat like airing dirty laundry in public.

I'm certainly not saying that mods, senior mods, or admins should be considered unassailable. But I think that having fairly frequent criticisms of mod/admin behavior posted on the board is generally undesirable. When there's bickering with the mods, it gives a negative impression to those less familiar with the site.

Obviously this works both ways. Moderators/admins need to be aware that they are held to a higher standard, due to the nature of the position, in order to minimize the potential conflict.

But I'm suggesting that folks think twice before criticizing a mod on the boards. Consider whether a PM could be used to address the situation.
