BuckeyePlanet Discussion - All views welcome

We have a new admin in LordJeffBuck; and five new Senior Mods in LoKyBuckeye, BB73, OilerBuck, JCOSU86 and Buckeyeskickbuttocks.

Wish them all well and your condolences.

New mods are enroute. I just have to decide whether I should warn them or not. Right now I'm leaning towards modding and running.

I think that when somebody has an issue with a moderator, it should normally be addressed via PM's.

To me, calling out a mod's actions by posting critical comments is somewhat like airing dirty laundry in public.

I'm certainly not saying that mods, senior mods, or admins should be considered unassailable. But I think that having fairly frequent criticisms of mod/admin behavior posted on the board is generally undesirable. When there's bickering with the mods, it gives a negative impression to those less familiar with the site.

Obviously this works both ways. Moderators/admins need to be aware that they are held to a higher standard, due to the nature of the position, in order to minimize the potential conflict.

But I'm suggesting that folks think twice before criticizing a mod on the boards. Consider whether a PM could be used to address the situation.

Agreed.

Let's not get too carried away here. It runs pretyy darn good 99% of the time.

Newbies need to learn the ropes without being stupid. The nice thing about here is that stupidity is usually self policed. Without that, we're Bucknuts with nice Christmas logo. Most new members have good/smart insight. My biggest problem is after a loss, when the sky falls and some want to criticize, to the extreme, that pisses me off. It's an uglt BN trait that needs to stay there.

Having open discussion for members only is a great idea.

I'm not really seeing the racial stuff, but the homo stuff is usually in fun and hurts no one but Elton John and Sushi (kidding).

The mods do a great job, but should also be subject to criticism in a post if necessary. That whole Thump thread was quite entertaining and didn't cross any lines.

I try to stay out of the Political thread because it's too easy to get out of hand.

Merry Christmas to all and if that offends someone, too bad. Happy Hanukkah,Kwanzaa also.

Down with ND !!!!!:)

Could "timing" have anything to do with ruffled feathers? Most here are fanatical and even tyrannical when we discuss Buckeye Football; especially during the active season. For myself, long-time member, few posts... I have tried to accept the persona that many have created: Tibor's avatar suggests that he is active in supporting his unique stereotype. At one point, I responded in kind with almost an obligatory ding' hell, it's Tibor, he wants scat & animal husbandry responses.
Further, I spend maybe 1/10th. of the time on the RR board during the season; my responses over here tend to be short certianly non-pc! Those who enjoy the insult threads open them; others do not.
I enjoy the community very well here, I've taken part in insults with mods, newbies, etc.. never intended harm & usually laughed thru them!
BUT, I would feel we are going "out-of-bounds" with excessive restrictions.
Last, I sincerely hope that no one could be "hurt" by responses/insults from board activity: Just a venue for great Buckeye info. & community, stay on topic & most insults are avoided.
Maybe we should try & identify the fragile & create a home for them, just swap the video forum for the warm, nurturing, & fuzzy forum.

Here is a thought from my perspective... I'm not new, but I'm on the site a ton, I just don't post too much... Posters are going to get what they expect out of the site (sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy). I joined because I am a die hard Buckeyes fan, it's just in my blood. I didn't go to school there, but as a (nearly) life-long Ohioan, it is in my blood. I joined Bucknuts a couple years ago because I was curious about recruiting. I wanted a site to provide me information with a dose of entertainment. When BP was started, I came over on my own (I don't know anyone on this site personally) to check it out, and found it was a better fit for what I was looking for. Great information, timely scoops, humor, some politics, and let's be honest, the RR doesn't hurt :tongue2: . There are a lot of inside jokes and gibberish threads, but I wasn't looking for those, so what happens in those doesn't bother me; they are 95% tongue in cheek. I have never been disrespected, nor felt indirectly offended; hopefully my posts come across the same way. The moral of the story is that I get exactly what I want out of BP because I came on to the site with a set of hopes/ expectations, and I never felt compelled to post anything detrimental to those with the same expectations. My vote is make OD members only (this way a newb can have a trial run to learn the ropes before being allowed access into an area where things get a little loopy--show they can handle it responsibly), and don't change a thing. Hopefully this thread will help people be a little more conscientious in their self-policing role. Remember, the first rule in self policing is to police yourself.

sorry for the ramble/ grammatical errors

CONGRAT'S NEW MOD'S

First off I love this site!! Depsite being a fan of one of OSU's most hated rivals I have sort of found a home here. I have made alot of stupid posts and have been ripped accordingly but have recently tried to learn a little from my mistakes. I do still however feel that I have to walk on eggshells at times here just because I have a different view which is sort of weird because most here seem to value outsiders opinions except when they are not in OSU'S favor...:wink2:

As for the mod's well as many of you know I have had a few issues with a couple of them but I am VERY PLEASED to see that those that I have had issues with have really stepped up to the plate and (at least in my opinion)
are doing a great job and have left past issues behind us. THANK YOU
GUYS!!

Finally, I have to say that I am (everyday) very impressed with the way you all have not only treated me but all the other ND fans who have came here due to the Fiesta Bowl game. The game has and still does a little make me a little nervous as as it gets closer tensions will get much more tight. I actually thought of staying away for a month or so because I thought I would be getting a lot more crap than I have. But it seems that most of the ND fans have came here with repsect and have been treated with respect.
Which makes me a very proud member of this board.

Future mods- Steve19 and Deety come to mind....

Personally, I think the rep system can be both useful and useless at the same time. One one regard, it's useless if you've been here for a while, you don't need to see how many medals somebody has to know who's an asshat and who's not. Where I do find it useful is when you read a funny/intelligent comment by a poster, you can rep them instead of cluttering the thread with a 'LOL' or 'great post'. Dinging somebody (unless it's Thump) is really quite pointless imo. If you disagree with them that strongly, formulate a response and post it.

Let me second that... I really like the individaul repping feature.. not so much worried about total rep.

and as meaningless it seems to have become... without it, we'd be left with number of posts. Ick.
