BuckeyePlanet Discussion - All views welcome

I don't really see any problem with merging them right away. The "new" title almost always includes the "(merged)", and the addition of the new post bumps the old thread to the front page.

We could probably all be a little more tolerant, especially if the thread is a repeat from something that is quite old.

I'll be honest, I'm going to continue to merge threads...it is a unique feature of BP. We run "clean" forums in terms of repetition and I do believe that needs to be upheld.

Perhaps it would be good if the mod who merges the thread PM's the new poster who started the dup thread to let them know what happened. That might help them understand where their thread went and why. We all need to try to be a little nicer to newbies unless they show a repeated disregard for how BP runs.

That's a good idea hawg, I totally agree.

buckeyefool's post was actually brought about by an acquaintance of his who is apprehensive about visiting b/c he doesn't want to have to read through 200 pages of a thread to find out the info. he wants.

So instead, he would rather clog up the main board with a question that may have already been answered a dozen times?

Pick your poison I guess.

How would a new visitor know if something's been posted 12 times?

I happen to agree with you, just trying to give you a viewpoint of a lurker or new poster. I hope you can understand where they are coming from.

I know it and I am giving you the viewpoint of those in charge of keeping the forum up to set standards...not an issue and a very useful discussion.

Anyway, a new user learns the same way we all learned...someone tells them to use the search function.

My point is that we have a standard around here...that is what makes this place what it is. Those standards come down...this place follows.

Before we get too "PC" around here, let's remember that BP was founded on the basis of the individual voice. Folks have every right to post the way they want...and others have that same right to respond. As long as it does not get personal and degrade into namecalling and such, a discussion should be able to rise in heat, peak at absolute disagreement, and then, hopefully, be compromised as an agreement to just disagree with no grudges being held going foreward. However, everyone has that right to discuss the entire course of an argument. By allowing this, we will not compromise the level of discussion on BP and those cannot rise to that level will be left to lurk or adjust their thought process to present a logical argument. I'm all for mass invovlement..but not at the sake of BP's expectations for intelligence.

Beautifully put, Grad! [no smiley]

There's that third person again... I vote we give Tibs at least one alias back before he cracks under the strain of a single personality. If he does, we might need a doctorb... and it's such a pain to go outside the network. :p

To avoid highjacking this thread, I'll toss in a suggestion. It might be possible to edit the forum template so under the "New Thread" button, there is a line of text: "Search to see if this topic already exists." Maybe?
