Speaking of the search function, and regarding prejudice on the board. . .

Do a search for "fag" and see what comes up; or type in another slur, who knows.

At least for the first one, for which there are very few "acceptable" uses, it is here not considered a "bad" term, or at least nobody bothers to say so.

Very sad, in my humble opinion. The obvious truth is that people don't mind the prejudice, or agree with it outright, but only want to maintain an aura of acceptance as much as socially necessary. While it may seem odd to some to imagine this prejudice being a "bad" viewpoint, it is only so to those that are not exposed to a wider culture, I can only assume. Oh well, I guess. . .

Search function. It works within a thread, too.

I understand you being the search Nazi and all  that you're are famililar with it but remember when I was trying to use the search function to find a thread of yours and I got 32 pages of stuff and that's b/c I'd forgotten about the advanced search option?

This site has a ton of links and options and sometimes I think a friendly reminder is all that people need. That's why I think a pm to a poster if you merge a thread of their's is a good idea.

I think it's a horrible idea...but only to be an argumentative dick.

Maybe what I was saying came off a little wrong.

I don't think we should have ton of multiple posts that is why I said that if the thread that was started was something that was started long ago we let it go for maybe a week, maybe less, before it was merged with the other one. If it was something that was started say a week ago then it woul dbe merged as soon as a Mod saw it.

If that doesn't work for people I would say at least a pm from who ever merged it saying hey welcome aboard we posted merged your thread with one that we did long ago, here is where it is.

And also what ever mod did it could avoid the " Hey jackass we already talked about this" then merged it. That seems like it would scare people off.

Hey jackass, that's exactly what I posted when you first brought this up. :p

How would a new visitor know if something's been posted 12 times?

I happen to agree with you, just trying to give you a viewpoint of a lurker or new poster. I hope you can understand where they are coming from.
maybe have a set of guidelines listed when some first signs up, or even post 'Board Rules" at the top of the board... i'm a member at Hoda-Tech.com, which has 175,000+ members, and reposts/n00b bashing is quite an issue. actually, i got banned for a repost over there, but it was my own fault... anyway, having a suggestion to SEARCH before you ask a question, especially for n00bs would suffice, to a degree, of course...

Good idea, LV. Or.... since when people sign up they have to provide an email, you could auto-send an email to anyone who requests membership. I know that wouldn't be too hard to implement.

Depending on how much goes into the membership approval process, it may even be feasible to have them reply, confirming they've read the "rules" before they receive posting privaleges.

This would eliminate a lot of the impending "I didn't know" excuses...
