Buckeye Tailbacks - 2004 (official thread)

I betted against Lydell getting 1k this year, because I think it will be TB by committee. I am not worried about Ross, but I don't think he'll get 25 or 30 carries a game (or even 20) either.

I can't promise you that Flydell will have a big year, but I'm pretty sure the young guys will get a shot if he isn't getting the job done. From what I saw in the Spring game Ross looked good and was only outshined by Pittman because he only played 2 series. If Ross had been in for all of Pittmans reps he would have had as good or better stats.

yep. ross has proven to me he isn't the man. same with hall. and the freshman are just that - rookies. Haven't had a chance to prove it. Ross has had three years, same with hall. IF you haven't gotten it done by now - it isn't going to happen imo. yeah - i know all about wells. how about the other 10,000 rb's who didn't???

faith - its all we have 'cause we have no track record to base anything off of.
hope - see above.

I truly hope Lydell has a huge senior year, becomes an early round draft pick and makes millions of dollars in the NFL. That said, other than the fact he's a senior and other players in the past have stepped up and had huge senior years I'm not sure where all the optimism about Lydell comes from. He struggled behind the same "terrible" offensive line that #13 thrived behind. He doesn't have the greatest speed or vision and most importantly he's never been able to stay healthy.

The RB position has been greatly improved with the addition of Tony Pittman and Erik Haw. Hopefully a healthier Mo Hall can contribute as well. If Lydell can stay healthy and have a big year even better. We should clearly get more production out of our backfield this year. A healthy Brandon Joe should help matters as well.

Woody always said you need a pair and a spare. Seems to me we've got a pair and a spare and a spare pair.

Pair--Ross and Hall (hoping for the breakout year for Ross; not sure about Hall's wheels, but you've got to love his dedication).

Spare--Joe (if either Ross or Hall falter, Joe is likely to see more carries).

Spare Pair--Pittman and Haw (what a luxury it is to have these youngsters waiting in the wings--both appear ready to play now).

So, how in the world can we be worried about the RB position?

FKA: Of course we have discussed RBs in general and Lydell specifically before.

But just last week, at the Jersey Scrimmage, he proved once again that his play is mediocre. He went for a sizzling 23 yards on 10 carries! Yet he remains, evidently, "JT's number one guy". That worries me and warrants, IMHO, some discussion.

If it's going to be "fresh-legs-runningback-by-committee", that's fine with me. I can take comfort in Joe, Pittman and Haw (but not Hall). But if JT is counting on Lydell's "break-out year", I'm more than a little nervous.

I'm not nervous at all. Lydell has played hurt, yada, yada, yada, excuse after excuse, blahblahblah. Either Lydell will get the job done, which I will admit he hasn't so far, or he will be riding pine, and there will be a different starter. Either way, I am not worried about the starting RB. Or any RB for that matter. Ohio State has a decent history of RB's who came out of nowhere their senior season and had great years. Jonathan Wells was drowning in mediocrity before Ross came out of the woodwork and pushed him into a great senior year. Tressel knows what he is doing. I, for one, feel confident that a healthy Ross will gain 1000 yards this year. I am not so confident that Ross can stay healthy, but if not, we have several RB's who will step up. Therefore, I am not worried.
