Buckeye Tailbacks - 2004 (official thread)

I agree about the RB's. I don't see a redshirt in eithers future. No way Ross and Hall both make it through the entire year without missing some time. When one or both go down you have to have the two freshman.

The big concern is that they pick up the blocking schemes quickly. If they can't it really limits what you can do offensively and makes it very easy for opponents to game plan defensively. Therefore I would venture a guess that Pittman is the one most likely to see time early on as he has had the extra time to learn the offense.

I think the blocking will be a challenge for our frosh RB's, but not one beyond their abilities. Pittman will benefit from spring practices, and Haw's already got a good background in blocking--used to play fullback his first few years in hs. They'll be up to the challenge. I can't be anything but optimistic about this team's future... once our young players hit their stride, I think they will be a force to be reckoned with.

Well you should be surprised because he might not even play on Saturday.

BTW he is a fullback and kind of a hybrid back. He could get carries but he will always be a fullback, maybe a fullback in a one back sense. I thought the thread was asking who was the #2. IT is either,Hall, Pittman or Haw.

Seeing as his weight has dropped to 235, and he was used in the tailback position in the Fiesta Bowl, he could definitely be used as either fullback or tailback. Remember that Clarett was 230 as a tailback, and both Clarett and Joe are 6'0". By the way, Joe came to Ohio State as a tailback, not fullback.

I don't think you redshirt Pittman or Haw even if they don't beat out Hall. Both need some experience playing in the 'shoe and need to see the speed of the game whenever they can to get ready for next year. Those two will be the only TBs on the team next year. Getting them ready to start next year is more important that saving a year of eligability IMO. I think both will end up beating out Hall and play enough for it to be well worth a year anyway. Freshmen RBs usually get beaten up, we don't want them taking too many snaps.

I agree that Joe will get some touches. He was just too good in the Fiesta Bowl. There are probably lots more fullback runs in the playbook this year than last.

If Ross goes down or doesn't perform, I'd personally go with Pittman. We sort of know what Hall can do, unfortunately, while Pittman's skills are pretty intriguing. But JT and the gang know much more than I do, so I wouldn't be surprised or unhappy if they put Mo Hall in. I'd love to see him do well, but haven't seen anything firsthand lately that would convince me he's better than Pittman or Haw or Joe.

# 2 tailback

Personally, I'd like to see Ross, Pittman, and then Haw. In reality, I think we'll see Ross, Hall (until his performance proves otherwise), and Pittman. In one back sets, I think we get Ross and Joe (he dropped 10-15 lbs to run and catch, not purely block). In the end, I think that Pittman and/or Haw will play a lot by game 5 (injuries and talent).

Go Bucks!

what about lydell in a FB role while joe is out?

just wondering. schnittker isn't doing much at FB and if lydell is so valuable at picking up blitzes (not my opinion) or as a leader why not let him contribute at fullback. kind of like a matt keller style fullback.
