Buckeye Tailbacks - 2004 (official thread)

Even though we have only played 3 games, my opinion is that the offensive line is still very young and have not had a chance to really start playing together. And getting to know each other also will help. It still seems strange to look at these guys on the field and notice the differece in thier bulk. They appear to be alot quicker but that doesn't mean anything either. I hope Brandon Joe can add some depth upon his return. Somethings gotta give here.

If we absolutely, positively, have to have Lydell in the line-up -- because he's a blocker or a captain or a senior or whatever -- FB might be the answer. Let him pick up blitzes on draws and screens to Pittman or downfield passes to Santonio, Bam, Roy or Teddy. Even let him run occasionally, to keep defenses honest. But let's abandon the notion that he can carry the load in the running game.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome.

Joe was in front of Lydell all of last season pretty much...I am not convinced that will help, what will help is if they split the carries between...Joe, Ross and Pittman....running back by committee doesnt sound to bad to me at this point in the season...but to get back on topic...

Ross has a hard time picking up blitzes, he would get killed trying to block a linebacker......

Let's move our starting Senior TB to FB. Start our new stud Freshman TB. Now all we need is an alcoholic QB, a DL that's hopped up on steroids, and we'd have the story line to "The Program". Throw in Halle Berry and this would be fuckin sweet!

Are you kidding? Ross can get to a LB faster than anyone on the team.

it amazes me that ross can avoid defenders when he is blocking but cant stay away from them when he is carrying the ball.....amazing....

I agree.

The coaches should play him at FB and just tell him to pretend he's got the ball. That should ensure contact with half the defense.

Agree completely Mili.

I think he is a terrific kid in every important way and I'd love to see him bust out of this slump and dazzle folks. But it's been a real long slump and I don't think it's unfair or mean-spirited to suggest JT try something new.

The other problem with putting Ross at FB is that we've been running so many plays out of a one-back or no-back set. In essence, if Ross was at FB for those sets, he would be on the bench. Which is the whole point, huh? I've gotta say, I really thought that if the O-line was decent, Ross would have a great year. But after watching the NC State game, I think I've given up. Pittman only had a couple of carries, but was always able to get 4-5 yards, while Ross could only get 1-2.
