Buckeye Tailbacks - 2004 (official thread)

I personally think that Lydell will not have a great season.

Why?

Unlike a lot of the players we are mentioning I do not see him has a team/bleeds scarlet and gray kind of guy. More of a ME guy. I think Lydell will have a Sr. Season closer to Rambo's than Wells.

The good news is I believe that, although he will not win two heismans, Eric Haw will be the kind of player that will remind us of Archie Griffin. Get ready, about mid season he will have a breakout game and then lookout for 3 more years of unbelievable plays.

I saw film on Haw and the kid is electric. I know Lydell is a Senior but hes gonna lose the starting job by years end. I know the tape of Haw I saw was H.S. players and not college players. His style of running is like Eric Dickerson. He breaks past the line and hes gone. If Haw gets running room the kid is gonna break it. He has alot better vision and moves than Ross does. Hes also not afraid to run it up the gut. You would think a guy with Haws speed would like to run outside the tackles but what he doea is runs up the middle and when he gets past the line thats when he takes it outside. In a footrace most of the time the kids gonna win.

Pittman and Haw have better vision, moves, and aren't afraid to be decisive when running the ball up the middle. Pittman and Haw will be the best runningbacks this year at OSU. Kennedy might have some say in these matters as well. If these guys gets touches in the UC or Marshall game they are gonna win the starting job. If our line has improved I could see Haw get 200 or more yards against UC defense. Lydell just doesn't look comfortable and doesn't seem to have the vision to get the right hole.

I don't think people comprehend how banged up Ross and Hall were last year.

I still think Hall made a multi-million dollar mistake not switching to Defensive Back as a Freshman.

Why not more passing ?
Holy shit you are an idiot. Do you know anything about football? Did you watch the Buckeyes last year? Your stupidity and ignorance continue to astound me. Half of the passing plays that were called last year ended up with either Krenzel running, throwing it away, or getting sacked. I suppose that is Lydell's fault too? Go back to pre-school.

A key factor will be how Haw and Pittman/Kennedy adjust to the reaction speed of D1 defenses. I hope we see a big year out of them, but we were all spoiled by MoC's vision and ability in his first few games. It's a lot to ask of a freshman to come in without skipping a beat from his HS highlight films. Our situation reminds me a little of UGA after Herschel Walker. They spent the next twenty years looking for the next HW rather than really appreciating the pretty good backs that followed him: Hampton, Worley, Davis, Gary, etc. (Many of whom had decent pro careers). I'm not saying we will do this, but we won't be seeing another MoC, for better and worse, so we ought to give the next guys up some slack.

Ok, oh wise one, who should have been running? Let's see, there was Ross (injured), Hall (injured), Guilford (inexperienced, ineffective), and......oh, wait, those were all the scholarship RB's. So, the coaches compensated, and ran Krenzel at times, and worked with what they had. Troy Smith even lined up at RB several times. I'm not even sure why I reply to you, as your ignorance speaks for itself.

There has to be a more technical issue that we haven't explored concerning the OL and the backs....Excluding injury( lets all pretend Mo Hall and Lydell are Healthy) what have they done with the OL. We know that MoC was able to bounce outside and cutback away from the playside. We know that he fell forward and got us extra yards...We also know that Mo Hall, Lydell, Haw, Pittman, Kennedy and everyone else are not Mo C.

What can the backs do to syncronize their timing with the OL. What plays can we run effectively to utilize the inexperience and weight of the OL. Surely, all of us have reasoned that screens and traps will be a part of the package. I bet we will take some bigger splits and make sure that our backs are ALL on the same page as to when they hit a hole, what hole they hit, and the timimg of such plays. I believe that we will also screen and hit some outlets in the flat, perhaps out of a two back set. We will see some leads in short yardage with either Joe getting the ball or A tailback behind him.

Our OL needs to get on guys and at least zone them out enough to create some lanes...I think we have been poor at this the past few years... I think we will get better with time...We have three senior backs and three freshman. I think they will push each other and we will develop some bread and butter plays. I just think it is going to take a lot of practice reps with the line to get timing down. Maybe Doc Tressel can teach this better than Spencer? I certainly believe we have the guys to do it; I guess it just needs to be done.

Louis you ignorant slut......this isn't PS2......you don't scrap 100 years of football tradition and a ground game and jump into some pass happy system...it doesn't work that way. You need to figure out a way to argue where your diluted thoughts are backed up with some intelligence. You need to support your arguments.
