College Football's 25 Greatest Mascots

25. Ohio State - Brutus Buckeye
It doesn't have the history or legacy of other costumed mascots started in 1965, but it's still as identifiable as any mascot in college football. It's a student with a big buckeye nut on his head.

Becoming Brutus: Two spots to fill on mascot team

ASSOCIATED PRESS

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? He?s the most recognizable face ? and head ? on Ohio State University?s football team and he gets perhaps the most face time, too.

Thirteen students tried out for two openings on the school?s four-member corps of Brutus Buckeye mascots who appear at football and basketball games and other events.

It?s a two-month process, beginning with six weeks of preparation. Each is interviewed by a panel of six judges then has an audition.

CPD: Nuts on Parade IV

Ohio State football: Nuts on Parade IV

So the Brutus statues weren't the moneymaker they were hoped to be.

The fundraising goals for the renovations for the William Oxley Thompson Memorial Library were still reached, according to an announcement today, in large part thanks to a $4 million donation from the athletic department. That was in addition to a $5 million donation from the athletic department that helped kick off the renovations two years ago.

All told, more than $108 million was needed for the project. State funds provided $70 million, $8 million came from unveristy money set aside for the project and the other $30 million came from donors, with more than 2,000 various donations coming in. The largest was that $9 million from the athletic department.

Now, more nuts:

I have been a buckeye follower for a long time but somewhere down the years i must have missed the year or season when the mascot Brutus Buckeye was introduced. Was it in the 50's era or 60's ? I did see one
hideous version of BRutus, but i can't remember when it was. I suppose they must have been pretty funny looking in the early years. Anybody know the history?
