3yacod: I've never used a Mac with IE before, but that sounds right (provided you get to select which cookies to "Never" accept). Do your menus look similar to the ones in my instructions page?
No, not really Mili. Basically there is a section in the preferences on accepting files. There is a specific screen/window for cookies. I have the option to
"Never Ask"
"Ask for each site"
"Ask for each cookie"
"Never accept"
This window also contains a box (scroll) which lists all the cookies that have been downloaded. I can delete them from that window as well. When I clear that window and I set the preference to "Never accept" the window always remains blank. I assume that I am NOT receiving any cookies when this happens. Sounds right, huh? There is no place (that I know of in IE 5.0 Mac) to prohibit specific cookies. I used your script and it seemed to work for me (with the "Never accept" setting). The capone web site let me vote more that once anyway. With my pref. set to accept cookies the capone web site will not give me the option of voting again.
Earlier on, when I was being devious, I would just delete the cookies that the capone web site dowloaded to my computer and then vote again.
3yacod: The only downside of setting the cookies acceptance to "Never accept" is that you most likely won't be able to log back onto here or Bucknuts, since they use cookies. The reason why my page kept working with your "Never accept" setting is that your browser is now blocking all cookies (including those from CapitalOne). I still think that once you log off from here and/or Bucknuts without restoring the setting back from "Never accept" you won't be able to log back on. If that's the case, what you may want to do is kept your cookies setting at "Never Ask" so can log in and out of your sites, and then when you want to run off a few dozen votes for Brutus, delete the cookies, set your cookie setting back to "Never accept", and use to page to blast a bunch of votes. When you're done voting, just restore the cookie setting back to "Never Ask" and you'll be able to log back into your sites.
I traded a few emails with the owner of the Auburn site that hosted aubie.exe. He decided in the end to take the program down.
I also spent some time emailing back and forth with the Capital One people behind the contest. (I have nothing but free time on my hands, anyone looking to hire a bedridden sicky?) Anyway, they're not unsophisticated people. They're well aware with efforts all around to circumvent the voting rules, and have tools in place to defeat them. Even though tools like aubie.exe appear to be effective, they're not. They have multiple checkers in place (I would assume both IP and cookie tracking), and a few others to boot that they wouldn't elaborate on.
All of this is moot though. We're still ahead of Auburn each week on the momentum meter. As long as we all stick with it through the December end of voting deadline, Brutus will get the top spot for this phase of the contest.
