Is Brett Favre gone for good?

CHRIS JENKINS

Associated Press

CHICAGO - After shredding the Chicago Bears in an otherwise meaningless 26-7 victory for the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night, Brett Favre certainly sounded like a man who was ready to leave the game.
Standing on the 20-yard line at Soldier Field after taking a photo with his offensive linemen, Favre got choked up during a TV interview, saying he would decide "soon" whether he would retire or return next season.

Packers want Favre back

It almost makes you wonder what all the big deal is about. Brett Favre retire? Why? Many can ask the question but only Favre can answer it, and a for a few moments it seemed as if he had. More ?

Column: Packers Await Favre's Final Word

CHICAGO (AP) -- It's going to be a long two weeks in the City of Broad Shoulders and weak arms. The anxiety level in Green Bay, meanwhile, could be elevated for that long or longer waiting to find out if one of the strongest arms the NFL has ever seen will be back next season.

Looks like Brett's coming back...

Favre reportedly will play for Packers in '07
Associated Press

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Brett Favre will return for his 17th NFL season, undeterred by his injuries and hoping to lead the Green Bay Packers back to the playoffs.

"I am so excited about coming back," the 37-year-old quarterback said Friday on the Web site of the Sun Herald in Biloxi, Miss. "We have a good nucleus of young players. We were 8-8 last year, and that's encouraging.

"My offensive line looks good, the defense played good down the stretch. I'm excited about playing for a talented young football team."

Was hoping he would just fade away.

I am in no way "hoping" he will fade away but I think he needs to take a step down. Sure, they have been rebuilding the team and he got closer this year than last to the playoffs but he needs to ask himself if he thinks he can actually win another ring. I don't think he can, I think his style of throwing lots of passes and often doesn't work as well as it used to. Corners have gotten bigger and faster, safeties watch the quarterbacks eyes more often now and linemen are a lot taller. In my opinion, all of this hurts the gun-slinger style offense that he runs.

All of that said, he is an icon to the sport, and I can understand that he deserves to go out on his terms. That being said, I am just afraid that his last season will be the one people remember. He's not getting any younger, so odds are his last season won't be pretty :(

That won't be the case. Do people remember Cal Ripken's last season when they think of him? Larry Bird? Walter Payton? I do agree that he's not doing anything to improve his legacy coming back, but it's strong enough that he won't tarnish it either.

At least he didn't drag it out this year.

But Roger Clemens will take care of that, in order for SportsCenter to have something to speculate about ad nauseum. :tongue2:
