Bret Bielema (HC Illinois)

former University of Illinois football coach Ron Zook was asked about critical comments made by Wisconsin's Bret Bielema and Michigan State's Mark Dantonio about the recruiting practices of Ohio State?s Urban Meyer.
.
.
.

?When you were in the Big Ten was there ever a conversation between you and the coaches at your meetings that you did not recruit players committed at other places?? Meyer was asked by host Bill King on the College Sports Nation channel on SiriusXM Radio.
?Never to my knowledge," Zook said. "You know, when I first went to the Big Ten somebody made a comment that it?s a ?gentlemen?s agreement.? I said, ?gentlemen?s agreement heck.? There were people always trying to recruit our guys. We had to recruit right to the end. I don?t know that it?s any different in the Southeastern Conference than it is in the Big Ten other than, hey, it?s like shaving, you miss a day and you don?t look good. I don?t ever remember them talking about that. Obviously, doing it the right way and not having illegal bumps and those kinds of things we discussed, as I?m sure everybody does, but there was never any conversation about, well if a guy commits then we?ll let him go. Because we had people constantly trying to come after our guys.
Zook suggested that there may be more to the dustup than recruiting players who have committed.
?I don?t know the whole story," Zook said. "I think there might have been a little bit more to it than maybe what?s being reported. I?m good friends with Bret. I was close to Bret and Mark, probably closer than anybody in the Big Ten, and those guys didn?t have any problem recruiting guys of ours that were committed. So there might have been something a little bit more than what?s being reported and that might have been what they were upset about."

Fuck you, Zook. If there's "more to it" then Bienema and Dantonio can turn Ohio State in. The only thing "more to it" is that they're scared shitless of what Meyer is going to do with these players on the field. That was never a concern with you.

Wiscy was the only Big Ten school (including the conference office's vote) to override the new rule allowing schools to offer four year scholarships.

Love to see Urban use that against [Mark May] for brains on the recruiting trail.

Because that will help him kick off players that don't pan out from his 12-man class. What a fucking douche.

Just think of it as one last Zooking, for the road.

The "Husker viewpoint":

- Pelini played down the drama between new Ohio State coach Urban Meyer and some of his Big Ten Conference coaching brethren, most notably Wisconsin's Bret Bielema.
Bielema criticized Meyer, cautioning that the Big Ten does not want to become a northern version of the SEC and its notoriously repulsive recruiting tactics. Meyer formerly coached at Florida.
"In the recruiting process, things often get turned and twisted," said Pelini, who was among Big Ten coaches who gathered earlier this month for a meeting in Chicago, where Bielema's comments were discussed. "I think everybody was on the same page when they walked out of the meeting."

- By the way, Pelini's philosophy on recruiting players who are verbally committed to other schools jibes with Meyer's philosophy (and that of most coaches, I'm guessing). "I'll continue to recruit them," Bo said. "Until they sign on the dotted line, we're going to recruit them."

St. Louis Rams: Sources close to the situation tell me that Jeff Fisher has interviewed two college assistants including Wisconsin running backs coach Thomas Hammock for the running backs job with the Rams. I'm told Hammock interviewed very well and that Fisher will be making a decision in the next 48 hours.

Another Wisky offensive assistant moving on? Bielema might have to have his assistants wear name tags to meetings.

So, what are you guys getting Bret and Jennifer to celebrate their impending nuptials?

How about a scale?

Nothing says romance like a cross-cut shredder (in sensible black, of course):

Maybe a panini press (which us heathens make with our low-class George Foreman Grill)

Or maybe you think Bret really, really needs a copper tub:

Or maybe you want to be ultra-sensible and get them this set of measuring cups:

Whatever you choose, be sure to include a nice note, wishing Bret and Jennifer many years of Badger happiness.
