Bret Bielema (HC Illinois)

Meh. Bert should've known what the roster looked like before he took the job. There's a reason why the Illini have been rotten for so long.....While going out to the media may not have been best choice here, I would assume that the players have been told in no uncertain terms that the coaching staff isn't happy with their performance. They, after all, are the ones actually out on the field making (or in this case, not making) the plays. I realize it has been a while since I played any competitive sports, but as a player, if you can't handle your coach calling you out or criticizing you, you probably don't have much of a future in sports.

This reeks of a reporter who never played any sports at all, or is carrying a grudge toward a former coach.

lol. Way to take accountability for your short comings as a Coach, Brett. Regardless of the players you inherited, you should be able to develop and improve some of them. Instead, you throw them all under the bus and say they suck. Going out on a limb and predicting the Illini don't win another game this season.

Maybe NW on Sr. Day, when the older guys who have stuck it out and say "screw u coach", play for themselves and their teammates. But even the Fighting Fitgerald's will play til the last whistle and still probably edge them out in the end.

I'm in agreement with @AJHawkfan , the talent at Illinois is hot garbage and has been for years. Its not a secret. How is what Bert said any different than Urban Meyer calling OSU's offense a "clown show" when he first took over? A spade needs to be called a spade, and our offense was that, and nothing Bert said is false. I'm not a fan of the guy, but I see no lies in what he said. I'm sure Bert has told his players the same comments in the locker room, and now took his comments to the public to further light a fire under their asses. Some will leave, and the rest will be fighting for their jobs next year. This is big boy football, if they can't take comments from their coach then go play intramural sports

Urban later apologized for the clown show comment. Then also later said that once you become a coach, those are your players and you are responsible for their play as a team.

But if you’re fine with a coach throwing his players under the bus in the media, you’d be okay with a player telling the media the shortcomings of the coach?

No, because a player doesn't rank as high as a coach in the order of things and never will.

But as he said, a spade needs to be called a spade. Right? If a guy went to the media and said “I don’t think the coordinator they hired last year is doing his job and putting us in the best position to win games. Coach Day needs to do something” not many Buckeye fans would support him. No matter how true it was.

How many times has Phil Jackson thrown HOF players under the bus in the media, same with Greg Poppovich, I guess you're not fine with that?
And regardless if Urban apologized or not, it was said, and he damn sure meant it.
There's also no comparison between a player talking about a coach. A coach runs the team, the player does not. Idk if you've ever played sports, but if you did, I'm sure a coach ripped you in front of the team, it happens. You don't rip the coach in front of the team. Apples to Plums comparison.

1. Phil and Gregg were coaching pro athletes. Talk about apples and plums.

2. Ripping someone in front of the team and ripping someone in the media is completely different. You know that.

3. Urban apologized because he knows a leader of men shouldn’t behave that way in the media. It doesn’t matter if he meant it. He said it, realized it was wrong and corrected it.

Coaching is coaching, and players in college are now earning money legally, so essentially they're pro athletes in the minor leagues.

Ripping someone publicly is still ripping them publicly, and many coaches have done it.

We can agree to disagree. But these are men, regardless if you think so or not. And the players are too sensitive to get ripped in the press, then they shouldn't be playing D1 football(or even sports in general). This article is a big nothing burger.
