Brendan Ferns (LB West Virginia)

Honestly I wouldn't be worried about losing out on Ferns or even the other two OL recruits from Ohio to ND. The reason I say this is not because "oh I don't think they're very good anyways" quite the contrary because I feel like all three are great players and I would've enjoyed having them on board (who knows maybe Ferns still does end up at OSU). No, the reason I say this is because when you have recruited like OSU has recruited the last 4 years these types of things are going to happen. You look at us bringing in 5 really talented OL last year and If I'm a top OL recruit I'm not going into that log jam of talented OL regardless if I feel I can beat everyone out. The same can be said for our LB situation because when you have two linebackers that are guaranteed to be around for 2 years (Raekwon/Lee) and who will not be unseated no matter what that leaves one other position open in the next two years. That one position has players like Hilliard, Booker, Jerome Baker, and Nick Connor all shooting for that next starting positing already. You have to imagine that even though these guys aren't afraid of competing perhaps they can't afford to throw caution to the wind either.

In the end I feel Ferns will end up at OSU because simply you don't grow up as big of a fan as Ferns did growing up (with a offer no less) then decide to go elsewhere.

I know everyone is going to be a little ticked about Ohio's best players going elsewhere but I have just accepted that's what's going to happen when you have built as much talented depth as we have over the last few years. You simply can't expect the best of the best to want to come into a packed house of elite players all the time. Either way I'd understand Ferns' decision.
I agree with most of your points. Our depth is a good problem to have, as it allows the staff to be more selective, but we will miss out on a number of kids due to depth. In the end I don't see Ferns in this class. Being a fan doesn't mean much nowadays, kids know this is now a business decision and not one made by a child just being a fan of a school. Countless cases of kids going to even the rival school that they grew up rooting for. OSU will be absolutely fine without Ferns, yet his signing would've been awesome to keep in state talent, but the guys next in line are every bit as talented, and I wish Brendan the best with his future

Only part of this that upsets me.. is OSU's part
Is there any industry hotter than petroleum (fracking) in the state... NO
so how is it that the most important university in the state has not positioned itself for
the Petroleum Engineering program to address the hottest industry in the state?

the only revenue of significance to the entire central to SE quadrant of the state
has come from fracking.. farmers who used to subside on $30K a year are now
multi-millionaires... so where are the top folks coming from - out of state
laborers are coming from in and out of state but the top dudes are all imports
because the pertinent degrees are offered out of the state
If you're talking educational programs alone, there's none better than Marietta College offers. So there's not really a reason that interested (non-athlete) students must go out of state to study pet e. But we're really not talking educational programs here.

PE is not the only avenue to Oil & Gas. Chem E or ME will get you there just as fast. I should know.
You're right ... but petroleum engineering (and to a lesser degree petroleum geology) is the discipline that will teach you about reservoir engineering, which is different from what ChE and ME degrees will get you qualified to do in the oilpatch.

In case you missed it earlier, there's been some movement on the Brendan Ferns/Ohio State front and it's not a positive update for those of you hoping for/counting on Ferns, the state's top linebacker, to end up Ohio State.

So, what happened? Basically, and quite simply: nothing went wrong, Ohio State just does not provide Ferns the academic program that he has long discussed as being a major component in his college choice, petroleum engineering. The Buckeyes and the Ferns family looked at a number of different options to try and make that work, but in the end, Brendan is making a forty-year choice, not just a four-year choice. Despite growing up rooting for Ohio State, and great relationships with Chris Ash and Luke Fickell, he will essentially "re-open" his recruitment and take a closer look at the programs who do offer that academic path. Obviously West Virginia and Penn State have been discussed in the past, but don't be surprised if LSU or any number of Texas schools finds their way into the mix.

Continued...

Fair enough but your company will train you and will pay for you to take few classes and on top of ME or Chem E you will end up a better engineer. A BS in eng is not the end of the road. It is just a teaser.

when we attended orientation for my son.. I remember the presentation that said we didn't have to worry about our son changing his major because OSU probably had every degree anyone would want

It's been interestingly quiet for this young man the last few months. Is WVU still thought to be the leader? I know tOSU is out of the running due to "available fields of study" and all that. What an interesting episode that was. Since then it's been crickets.

Ohio State got their guy in Borland. It seems unlikely they'll add a second LB in the class, and if room opens up, Aaron Hansford, who just ran a laser timed 4.47 at The Opening, will likely get the first look.

Yeah that wasn't a tOSU fishing update. Was more a comment about his recruitment in general, and how quiet it has been since he made the stout decision to choose a school solely based on his degree opportunities. Like I said, it's just interesting. There doesn't seem like a lot of activity with him given his lofty ranking. Wonder if he will be a Mountaineer after all?
