Brendan Ferns (LB West Virginia)

I would love to wrap him up next weekend. We only need 2 LB's in this class and having Borland/Ferns to follow up 2014/2015 would be remarkable. The depth chart would be stacked at LB. And I see Ferns as very important not only for locking up this LB class but protecting our borders. Brendan is a top 5 LB nationally imo and after Eichenberg/Kraemer, it would be nice to swing things back our way in-state. Don't get me wrong, we have done great in '16 with Hausmann, McCall, Hill, Cooper, and Hawkins so far but getting Ferns would be big.

The awesome thing about the 2016 class in regards to OL, LB and now DE, is that due to the caliber of talent we brought in at those positions in the previous classes, we're essentially playing with house money with these positions. As much as I'd love to get Ferns for all the reasons you mentioned(especially to seal up top in state talent), he's not an absolute must get. And if our "plan b" would be Hansford, that speaks volumes to the talent of this class and well the caches have been recruiting.

I like your point, but if PSU is his landing point if he doesn't come here, I would argue he's def a "must get" despite what our depth might look like currently.

Agree to disagree, but I think Hansford is no slouch and is a 1b to Ferns at this time. I'd love to get Ferns in this class, but the staff has us in a great position regardless.

I think Ferns is either a Buckeye by the end of May or both will part ways. If he does commit to OSU, there is a still a chance they could pursue Hansford or possible star chase for a guy like Caleb Kelly. I think the number at LB will be 2 but it could be 3 if it's the right 3.

Honestly I wouldn't be worried about losing out on Ferns or even the other two OL recruits from Ohio to ND. The reason I say this is not because "oh I don't think they're very good anyways" quite the contrary because I feel like all three are great players and I would've enjoyed having them on board (who knows maybe Ferns still does end up at OSU). No, the reason I say this is because when you have recruited like OSU has recruited the last 4 years these types of things are going to happen. You look at us bringing in 5 really talented OL last year and If I'm a top OL recruit I'm not going into that log jam of talented OL regardless if I feel I can beat everyone out. The same can be said for our LB situation because when you have two linebackers that are guaranteed to be around for 2 years (Raekwon/Lee) and who will not be unseated no matter what that leaves one other position open in the next two years. That one position has players like Hilliard, Booker, Jerome Baker, and Nick Connor all shooting for that next starting positing already. You have to imagine that even though these guys aren't afraid of competing perhaps they can't afford to throw caution to the wind either.

In the end I feel Ferns will end up at OSU because simply you don't grow up as big of a fan as Ferns did growing up (with a offer no less) then decide to go elsewhere.

I know everyone is going to be a little ticked about Ohio's best players going elsewhere but I have just accepted that's what's going to happen when you have built as much talented depth as we have over the last few years. You simply can't expect the best of the best to want to come into a packed house of elite players all the time. Either way I'd understand Ferns' decision.

From what I understand the lack of a petroleum engineering program is the key thing holding Ferns back from being a Buckeye.

Too bad, since the petroleum and reservoir engineering program was active on campus when I was there in the 70s.

Only part of this that upsets me.. is OSU's part
Is there any industry hotter than petroleum (fracking) in the state... NO
so how is it that the most important university in the state has not positioned itself for
the Petroleum Engineering program to address the hottest industry in the state?

the only revenue of significance to the entire central to SE quadrant of the state
has come from fracking.. farmers who used to subside on $30K a year are now
multi-millionaires... so where are the top folks coming from - out of state
laborers are coming from in and out of state but the top dudes are all imports
because the pertinent degrees are offered out of the state
