Breaking Bad / Better Call Saul

After Breaking Bad, I was convinced that Vince Gilligan might be the best of this generation. After these two episodes, he might damn near be the best TV producer of all time. I'm already completely captivated.
Agreed. Spin offs never work. I DVRed the series and stalled on watching the first episode for that very reason. When I did watch the first episode, I wasn't even paying attention. Not only is the spin off working....it's probably a top 3 show on TV right now.

I actually went from an episode to a different channel that was playing a commercial for Big Bang Theory. It's almost criminal that a show that stupid and that bad gets all this acclaim....and a show like Better Call Saul is so under appreciated.

I thought at the end of the episode it was going to reveal Mike's daughter-in-law wearing a wire for the police.

The subtlety of "Hold on Loosely" by 38 Special playing in the cop bar and Mike using a .38 to kill the cops (very next scene) was funny (almost like "Bodies" by Drowning Pool playing in Breaking Bad when the bathtub melted through the ceiling).

Absolutely agree. Some shows use camera angles, lighting, and music to try to create an environment and it ends up feeling forced and hollow. Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are not those shows. That episode was fantastic.

I supposed two things stood out to me from Monday's (3/23) episode:

- The use of silence when Jimmy McGill is denied an attorny job (in a past scene).

- The comedy of Chuck McGill (Michael McKean) being silent throughout the entire negotiation (with the defense team) and then all of a sudden blurting out "$20 million".

Given we know Jimmy cannot possibly be a successful civic attorney because something leads him to change his name and become Saul, last nights episode and the previews for next week offer a pretty clear indication he's about to get screwed out of his big payday by Howard's claim to the money, and Chuck and Kim take Hamlin's side.

It crept in my head, I was ready for Kim to tell Jimmy in the nail salon that she was either pregnant with Hamlin's child or dating Hamlin.

***I need to tell my cop friend to tell his boss (while on duty), "If I need a gun, I'll use his," (in this case, he'll allude to his partner).

One thing that surprised me was that I was thinking that Jimmy was going to try to hustle/set-up the wrong person (a cop) and end up in jail. So it would be a call-back to an earlier episode, however this time Chuck wouldn't be there to bail him out.

But that didn't happen.

It probably would've been out of character if Jimmy took the partner job in Santa Fe.

I'm still laughing at the "Chicago Sunroof" part...and the boy scouts being in the back seat.

If you build it, I will come.

Great reference from Breaking Bad Season 3.11 ABQ too ...

"If you're committed enough, you can make any story work. I once told a woman I was Kevin Costner, and it worked because I believed it."

Wow, I didn't even realize that call-back.

I look forward to seeing Jimmy swindle people in Season 2 and morphing into Saul.

I fucking love this show. I dug BB. I don't think it's the best show ever like some do. I'm not knocking BB, I just don't think it's up there with The Wire or The Sopranos. That being said, I think BCS could be my favorite show ever by the time it's over. Just a damn good show. Humor, drama, suspense...it has everything.

It really should have it's own thread.
