Brady "XLLL" Hoke (Head Coach San Diego State)

Harbaugh was the one and only that was going to lift UM back up to the top, no question. Not sure if he really had any interest in going back to AA, but that doesn't matter at this point. UM's approach to the whole thing was laughable at best, certainly didn't give themselves a chance to secure his employment with them. But I don't think that was ever in the cards.

OSU (and the BIG) needs UM to be a top 10 team, every year, and there is no reason that can't happen. Michigan administrators need to understand that coaching is the MOST IMPORTANT factor in college football. Period. The name of their coach and how it relates nationally and to NFL rosters is what recruits are looking for. They have fucked up twice (actually 3 times if you count letting Carr stay the course his final 3 seasons), and just can't get it right. Timing is everything with landing the right guy, but holy [Mark May] they have simply botched it as of late.

Look at Texas, Florida, and USC. Significant programs with talented rosters but very poor coaching. It's a joke. None of those 3 programs should ever fall outside the top 20 w/their resources. It's simply mis-guided coaching. Michigan is right there with them. Michigan has some serious looking in the mirror to do.
Yeah, there's different stories out there about how much interest JH really had in the job in the first place. But, the one thing that has been corroborated by multiples sources is that Brandon didn't make the necessary effort to try to sway him from the NFL. He wanted him to "interview" for the job. Talk about arrogance. A coach of Jim Harbaugh's calibre, who is in that much demand, does not "interview" for a job like that.

If scUM/Brandon were serious about bringing him "home", they should have been making back-channel overtures as soon as they knew RR was done (which was in early-mid November), and made him an offer he couldn't refuse. Asking him to "interview" is half-assing it and basically saying "wellll, we're considering you, come convince us you DESERVE to coach here." That's idiotic. Could you imagine if Gene Smith and the BoT in Columbus offered Urban an interview for the job? That's how you end up with a <.500 coach, and that's how you end up where they are now. That's how tOSU could have ended up with somebody like Pelini instead of a coach that has started 21-0 and has the tOSU program soaring.

I'd say that tOSU has been incredibly lucky. Every major program has had a down period spanning several seasons, in my lifetime. What happens if Urban wanted to stay retired? I cringe to think whereb tOSU would be had Andrew Geiger not blessed us with his wisdom by hiring a D1AA coach. How many times has that even worked?!

We could very easily be in the middle of the Pinkel era following the Belloti fiasco.

Good thing they aren't a school to throw a pile of money at a coach. Their best bet would be to get Miles.
Miles is 60. He probably has 5-6 more years tops. They need somebody young and energetic that can lead them for 10+ years and break the cycle of changing coaches every 3-4 years. I don't know who that is, but they need to break from the myth of the "m*ch*g*n man." Yeah, that failed once, but that was a poor fit from the start.

Their only play is to hope a JT or Urban disciple can establish themselves at a MAC school or...let's say...Purdue, then hire them. It's the true Michigan way.

I hear Ron English is available.

Not sure where to put this, and apologies if this is a repost, but thought it was funny all the same.

Hoke apologists

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Recently some posters have voiced their displeasure over Hoke bashing and I just wanted to say I think it's perfectly acceptable and warranted at this point to bash Hoke and the entire coaching staff. This is pathetic. Many coaches out there are doing far better with less talent. The youth of the OL excuse doesn't work anymore. Team youth in general doesnt work. The coaches get paid big money and have lots of talent at their disposal. What infuriates me is watching them put the kids in a position where they just aren't going to be successful. They don't do any adjustments - pre game or during the game. They still have Gardner dropping back on slow developing plays when they know the OL can't hold up. It's baffling! That stupid 3 stacked WR formation is the closest thing they'll do to be 'creative'. Very seldom do we see bubble screens or any other way to get the ball in space on the perimeter. No draws or other ways to maybe let the pass rush actually work for them and against the defense.

Now we're getting beat by mediocre teams (without their starting QB) even at home. Don't even get me started about the ineptitude of this staff to get the team prepared and playin well on the road. I think Borges and Funk need to be fired and Hokes leash should be very short. Losing the rest of the games is quite possible. Most likely we are a 4 loss team in a crappy conference going into a 2nd or 3rd tier bowl game.

So enough with apologizing for hoke and being too impressed with recruiting! It's vastly overrated. What on earth has he shown to suggest he's anything more than a second rate coach? At least with Richrod we knew what kind of team he wanted to field. Hokes only philosophy is predictable man ball and he's too stubborn and dedicated to his friends on the coaching staff to make some tough choices and think outside the box. I'm sickened by the whole thing.

Les Miles may be 60, but he has more energy than most. I think he'd be their best possible hire. They need very desperately to get fixed quickly, and then think about their long term hire. Problem is, there's a few jobs on that level (or close) that should be open-Nebraska, UF, Texas...

I think they're really overlooking just how shitty the players on their offense are.

They have exactly one player who is above average at his position: Funchess.

They ran an end around to him which I thought was simultaneously creative and pathetic. Their TE is the only player on offense worth going out of their way to get the ball to.

Well, first things first; they aren't firing Hoke this year. No way, no how. He's Brandon's "guy" and he isn't gonna admit a mistake after 3 years no matter how much people want him to. Depending on how poorly things go, I'd expect him to be nudged into making some staff changes this offseason with improvement expected next year and competing for a B1G title by 2015. If they don't show significant improvement next year (and with what they have coming back, and that schedule it won't be easy), he may be on the chopping block next December. You can't fire back-to-back coaches after three years and expect anybody to even think about being your coach that has any kind of options.

I missed the play that he is referencing here, but a pretty good synopsis of UM football right now. . . style over substance.

CFN Analysis: Huskers Take The Big House

. . .

Perhaps what is more concerning to the Wolverines though is a rapidly-developing culture that doesn't seem to "get it." Late in the second quarter, WR Jeremy Gallon had a crease on a punt return that could have gone as far as it needed to to score points. He was pointing out blocks. His own player (not really a fault of his) destroyed a Nebraska defender on a block, pushing it into Gallon, who crashed to the ground about 30 yards sooner than he probably should have. Immediately, senior captain OT Taylor Lewan was the first to celebrate the block, never mind the fact that it cost Michigan likely a long FG try.

While it's something mostly innocuous at first and second glance, it's a sign of where this program is right now. Soft, style over substance, and not mature enough as a football team. If there's a fix for this program, it painfully is probably not on this roster or in that coaching staff this particular year.

I was perusing stadium and main earlier and there was a thread discussing potential replacements. A few guys over there acknowledged that the best bet was probably to hire someone who had worked under Meyer, the same way they had to hire Bo to beat Woody. Charlie Strong was the top mention, w/ the hope of bringing in Dan Mullen as OC after he doesn't work out at Miss. St.

Look at the recruiting bases that Texas, Florida, and USC have - the three best in the country. Now look at Michigan's - not much in-state, and nothing available from Ohio that the Buckeyes haven't already passed on. It's more than just coaching, as Michigan has a built-in recruiting disadvantage. Sucks for them.

Yeah, I'm heartbroken for them. If scUM is going to be successful they need a great nationwide recruiter. Luckily for us there are only a few of those and we have one of them.
