Brady "XLLL" Hoke (Head Coach San Diego State)

Look at the recruiting bases that Texas, Florida, and USC have - the three best in the country. Now look at Michigan's - not much in-state, and nothing available from Ohio that the Buckeyes haven't already passed on. It's more than just coaching, as Michigan has a built-in recruiting disadvantage. Sucks for them.
Not to mention, their current head coach seems to sell a sense of entitlement to the kids he's recruiting. His whole pitch seems to be "we're m*ch*g*n"...like that means anything anymore. All you have to do is view their recruit's twitter feeds to see they aren't recruiting the kind of kids that they need to compete with tOSU, or apparently even MSU at this point.

Yep, it's the whole greatness by association thing - "Most wins in the history of college football, 11 national championships, 42 Big Ten titles, the largest stadium, Ole Number 98, blah blah blah...."

But like you say, that doesn't mean anything anymore. Since Michigan's half-title in 1997, they have .676 winning percentage, which places them 17th in the FBS. By the way, Ohio State is fourth (.777), and even Wisconsin (.706) has passed the scummers. In each of those 15 seasons, Michigan has had at least two losses, and seven times they have had four or more losses; they are looking at another 4+ loss season this year. Which means that when Michigan is at their very best, like their fluke 11-2 season in 2011, they are barely relevant on the national stage (12th in AP, 9th in BCS), and when they are at their "average" they are struggling to win nine games and play in a third-tier bowl.

So, in other words, the "M" really does stand for "mediocre."

Harbaugh was the one and only that was going to lift UM back up to the top, no question. Not sure if he really had any interest in going back to AA, but that doesn't matter at this point. UM's approach to the whole thing was laughable at best, certainly didn't give themselves a chance to secure his employment with them. But I don't think that was ever in the cards.

OSU (and the BIG) needs UM to be a top 10 team, every year, and there is no reason that can't happen. Michigan administrators need to understand that coaching is the MOST IMPORTANT factor in college football. Period. The name of their coach and how it relates nationally and to NFL rosters is what recruits are looking for. They have fucked up twice (actually 3 times if you count letting Carr stay the course his final 3 seasons), and just can't get it right. Timing is everything with landing the right guy, but holy [Mark May] they have simply botched it as of late.

Look at Texas, Florida, and USC. Significant programs with talented rosters but very poor coaching. It's a joke. None of those 3 programs should ever fall outside the top 20 w/their resources. It's simply mis-guided coaching. Michigan is right there with them. Michigan has some serious looking in the mirror to do.

Um, no we don't.

I agree we need another top ten program in the b1g. But it does not necessarily need to be tsun. We need someone to fill the vacuum left by tsun, like Stanford did when USC crumbled.

Michigan State & Wisconsin
But I don't think either has "national appeal" like the scUM brand
It feels like Nebraska should be able to make that step, but they... just... aren't...

Just some food for thought regarding scUM coaching hires...

1965: 4-6-0
1966: 6-4-0
1967: 4-6-0
1968: 8-2-0

Being a great "Michigan Man" coach has been about being an Ohio State Assistant since before I was born.

Agreed, I am tired of hearing that somehow we need scUM to be a good team, we don't, we need the B1G to improve, but that has little effect on scUM, I am more than happy if they continue on the path they are on barely skirting bowl eligibility every year.

x3

Especially with the playoff format upon us.

Give me a set up like this year every time.

And people wonder why folks here in Nebraska are the way we are, when it comes to the football team.

My God, how DELUSIONAL are the hobbits up in Ann Arbor if they're not calling for the ouster of everybody from the AD to, quite frankly, the inept QB?!?

Um, if it ain't UM, it had better be someone else then, and preferably a couple others. I don't get all fucking hung up on all this conference bull shit talk, and with the play off system coming, it's becoming more and more irrelevant. But, if SOS is going to be any type of factor in future rankings, then the BIG needs a team or two to step up to the plate. From a rivalry standpoint, I prefer beating michigan when they're halfway decent, but that's just me. Other fans live to watch them fail, I get that too, doesn't matter either way.

Regardless, Brady Hoke isn't the answer for Michigan. That's clear. Next up......

Yeah, there's different stories out there about how much interest JH really had in the job in the first place. But, the one thing that has been corroborated by multiples sources is that Brandon didn't make the necessary effort to try to sway him from the NFL. He wanted him to "interview" for the job. Talk about arrogance. A coach of Jim Harbaugh's calibre, who is in that much demand, does not "interview" for a job like that.

If scUM/Brandon were serious about bringing him "home", they should have been making back-channel overtures as soon as they knew RR was done (which was in early-mid November), and made him an offer he couldn't refuse. Asking him to "interview" is half-assing it and basically saying "wellll, we're considering you, come convince us you DESERVE to coach here." That's idiotic. Could you imagine if Gene Smith and the BoT in Columbus offered Urban an interview for the job? That's how you end up with a <.500 coach, and that's how you end up where they are now. That's how tOSU could have ended up with somebody like Pelini instead of a coach that has started 21-0 and has the tOSU program soaring.

Don't think Harbaugh ever wanted the job in the first place, the 49ers having the upper hand. Either scUM couldn't match their offer, or JH overpriced himself.
Smart cookie.

GO BUCKS!!!! :urban2:
