Lester looks "tremendous"
By Tom Caron, NESN Staff

Ever since doctors declared Jon Lester cancer-free, the Red Sox have stressed that they will make sure not to overload him with work. That continues to be the team's official stance, but it's getting harder and harder to hold him back.

He would be a nice arm to get back to our pitching staff. He would give the team a solid MRP if we get in trouble early.

Manny mania

By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff

Things are finally quieting down here today. Manny left about an hour ago... as expected, he did not speak with reporters, and has given no indication that he intends to do so. Last year, he spoke once at the start of camp, and that was it. That, of course, is his prerogative, though it leaves many questions unanswered.

from the Bostonist:

In baseball, spring training almost went WWF yesterday. In the Red Sox game against the Tigers, the Tigers' Magglio Ordonez got knocked upside the head by a ball from Josh Beckett. Ordonez went to the hospital.

It might not have caused a brawl if Beckett hadn't hit Gary Sheffield upside the head in the first inning. By the time Detroit's Todd Jones was on the mound, he was in the mood to retaliate toward JD Drew. Bench-clearing, manliness, and mouthing ensued, but nothing serious. However, it means that future Red Sox-Tigers matchups will be fun to watch. (By the way, the Red Sox beat the Tigers 7 to 6.)

Dice-K gyros his way into spotlight

By HOWARD ULMAN
AP Sports Writer

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- Fans flock for his autograph. Cameras record his simplest moves. Batters look for his mysterious "gyroball" - if it even exists. He's just one of hundreds of rookies at baseball spring training camps this year, but he's swooned over like a rock star. Matsuzaka Mania slammed into spring training at full force and hasn't let up.

I read the Gyro is simply a Slider but thrown with a different grip, thus giving the ball a different look. It'll be interesting to see the pitch and how big league hitters react to it. Actually, and it's been a while since I read it, I believe the article said that there's little doubt the pitch has been thrown in the majors, but that the pitcher who threw it thought he was throwing a slider.

it's so frustrtaing listening to ESPN Analysts and ESPN Sportscenter Anchors continually referrng to the gyro-ball when pitching coaches for the Red Sox and hitters continually say he has many pitches but nothingh abnormal...the guy is going to be good, but for the love of God stop talking about this mysterious pitch as if its a fact when every hittere has said he good control, a nice change-up and good acceleration when he needs it

ESPN just did a special segment on the gyro-ball. Turns out it's actually a slider that doesn't slide. Every American pitcher that throws a slider can throw a gyro, but when they do it it is a mistake. Dice-K has "perfected" the wrist action that causes the slider to "gyro," so that it spins around like a bullet and flies flat, rather than breaking at the plate. The batter sees the same breaking ball spin on the laces with the gyro, so they end up getting jammed on the hands. The key is the pitcher has to be able to intentionally throw both a great slider and a "bad" one, and most pitchers can't do it. That's probably why most observers said there was no gyro-ball, they're just seeing a 92mph fastball that doesn't 'hop' like a fastball should.
