Boston Red Sox (9x World Series Champions)

It's "Manny being Manny" again:

Last night was the 22d game out of 30 Manny Ram?rez has missed since taking himself out of the last game of the Yankee massacre Aug. 21, during which he has been paid $1.918 million (calculated on his base salary of $15 million this season) -- he had the audacity this week, through agent Greg Genske, to reiterate to the Red Sox his desire to be traded this winter.

I really dont think the RedSox will trade Manny, they simply can not afford to let him go. Yeah he his a clubhouse cancer and lazy. There is no way the RedSox would get value in return. His contract is too big along with his ego.

J.D. Drew to Boston

So, $50m to NEGOTIATE with Daisuke Matsuzaka, an unproven Japanese pitcher, and now a $14m/year deal with an injury-prone 31-year old with a .286 career average. Good job Theo, fantastic investments.
That's ridiculous. They'll be lucky if he averages 90 games played over the next three years...provided he passes the physical of course.

After Theo won the World Series his new mission is to dismantle this team.....J.D. Drew for that kind of cash? Is this guy kiddin? Anyone remember JD missing a week b/c he was sore from swimming. Good luck with all that Boston.

What kills me on all this is the Red Sox were crying cash restrictions at the trade deadline. Are you freakin kidding me?

And you can't tell me there was no tampering going on for Drew to walk away from 11 mill a year. Give me a break, this guy wouldn't have got another 11 mill offer from any other team in baseball. The Dodgers are lucky he left.

Rockies Weigh Dealing Helton to Boston

By ARNIE STAPLETON
AP Sports Writer
DENVER ? Todd Helton's long run in Denver could end soon. The Colorado Rockies and Boston Red Sox have been in trade discussions involving Helton for several weeks and those talks apparently are heating up. The team's most recognizable player, Helton has long been a fan favorite in Denver, but he has been beset by injuries and illness the last two seasons, and his power numbers have nose-dived.
He's due to make $16.6 million this season on a team with a projected payroll of about $55 million, something team owner Charlie Monfort has called problematic.

Talks to continue

By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff
The Red Sox and Rockies were expected to continue their discussions on a possible Todd Helton deal on Monday.

While discussions have been ongoing, there's a major hurdle to overcome. Which of the prospects coveted by the Rockies would the Sox be willing to give up in addition to Mike Lowell and Julian Tavarez? Among the players Colorado likes include Craig Hansen, Manny Delcarmen, Clay Buchholz, Jacoby Ellsbury, Daniel Bard and Jon Lester.

One of the six the Sox might consider dealing is Delcarmen, but Theo Epstein doesn't appear to be keen on giving up any of his young pitching and that's where the deal could die.

Schilling: I'll play in '08

By Steve Silva, Boston.com Staff

Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling said this morning on Boston sports radio station WEEI that he will not retire from baseball at the end of this season, as he previously had planned, and that he is in discussions with the Red Sox on a contract extension for 2008.

Continued...

(rumor was that he wanted to run for John Kerry's Senate seat, but apparently not now)

Big mistake if the Sox do that deal. That's 90mil they can use to win the rights of the next Japanese phenom.

Rumor is the Rockies would take on nearly half of that $90 mil. That leaves the contract at about $45 mil/6 years or $7.5 mil per year. That sounds pretty cost-efficient to me for what Helton would potentially bring to the table.
