Boston Red Sox (9x World Series Champions)

Denver Post

Boston would be assuming more of Helton's contract than originally believed, with the Rockies subsidizing $36.6 million of the remaining $90.1 million - not almost half as often mentioned-- and just $20 million after this season, according to a major league source with direct knowledge of the negotiations.

That would leave the Red Sox to pay Helton $53.5 million over six years, a commitment that so far has prevented them from also parting with either Hansen, Delcarmen or Double-A center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury

The deal, the source confirmed, hinges directly on the Rockies getting another young player along with third baseman Mike Lowell and reliever Julian Tavarez. If they don't, the Rockies appear prepared to walk away from the deal.

Rumor is the Rockies would take on nearly half of that $90 mil. That leaves the contract at about $45 mil/6 years or $7.5 mil per year. That sounds pretty cost-efficient to me for what Helton would potentially bring to the table.

True. If they can get the Rockies to eat that much, it's a no brainer.

It's about time for the Wankees to finally win another. I mean it's been nearly $1 Billion of payroll spent since their last one.

Big deal... Work how much the Cubs have spent since their last WC. Hell, how much did Boston spend for 86 years between WCs? 1 Billion? Big Effin deal. That's nothing, comparatively.

Incidentally, it's not like the Sox don't have a huge ass payroll, you know. When's the last time the Yanks spent over 50 million just to TALK to a foreign Pitcher. :slappy:

Careful with those stones in that glass house.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- Photographers jammed the left-field line from home plate to third base. Daisuke Matsuzaka threw the first pitch of his first batting practice. Then he threw 43 more -- fastballs, curves, sliders and changeups.
When the Japanese star was done, Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell gave him a positive review.
"He's as advertised," Farrell said. "He really is."

Lester looks "tremendous"
By Tom Caron, NESN Staff

Ever since doctors declared Jon Lester cancer-free, the Red Sox have stressed that they will make sure not to overload him with work. That continues to be the team's official stance, but it's getting harder and harder to hold him back.
