Good news also from the minor league front as Jon Lester looks sharp in his first outing.

Lester sharp in minor league outing

By PETE IACOBELLI, AP Sports Writer

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Jon Lester passed a major test Thursday. The Red Sox pitcher has a much bigger one ahead later this month. Lester made his first start of the year Thursday night for the Class-A Greenville Drive as he attempts to return to Boston's rotation after an offseason of cancer treatments and uncertainty. He shut out the New York Yankees' affiliate, the Charleston RiverDogs, on one hit over four innings before coming out.

Bill Simmons on Daisuke

Roll of the Daisuke

By Bill Simmons

When my editors asked me to keep a running diary of Daisuke Matsuzaka's first Red Sox start, I wasn't enthused about the idea. After all, the game was taking place in Kansas City and I live in Los Angeles. If I couldn't sit at the Kauffman Stadium press box and write down mundane tidbits while sitting at a crammed table with 20 other sportswriters, the column just wouldn't feel credible.

Any discussion on who our 5th starter should be. I know Tavarez is in today as the 5th man but he obviously can't get it done. Honestly I can't stand the guy. Do we think that when we get Lester back, he will be bumped up to the 5 spot in the rotation? That sounds pretty good to me.

I really liked Devern Hansack coming out of the spring. If Julian Tavarez continues to pitch like well, Julian Tavarez, then I say bring Hansack up. Kyle Snyder would be another viable option until Jon Lester is healthy enough to come back.

How about Craig Hanson??

Hansen is screwed up right now.

The Sox have tried to tweak his mechanics to make him a little less erratic and injury-prone. He's lost velocity and his pitches are flatter because of it.

There's also issues with his confidence. He made a rapid ascent through the minors and found himself in the majors before he was ready. He got beat around and lost all confidence beacuse of it.

I don't think you'll see Hansen in the majors anytime soon. Kid has tons of potential, just needs some time to work out the kinks.
