Agent: Cassell expected to sign with Celtics once he clears waivers Monday

The rich are about to get richer in the Eastern Conference.


The Boston Celtics are expected to sign Sam Cassell once the guard clears waivers at 6 p.m. ET on Monday, his agent David Falk told The Boston Globe. Cassell will likely be a backup to starting point guard Rajon Rondo but the 15-year veteran could see action during key late-game situations.

"We've talked to all the teams that expressed an interest in Sam and nothing is going to change," Falk told the Boston Globe. "He's still going to sign with the Celtics. The only unknown is if some team claims him off waivers. But I consider that to be highly unlikely."

With the depth Boston is picking up and the emergence of some younger guys, this team will be a lot more fresh come playoff that I ever imagined. Detroit will be a formidable foe, but unless the Cavs can gel (and quickly), it's a two-team race right now in the East...

... which is a lot better than the West, where it will be an 8-team race in the playoffs. That puts Detroit and/or Boston in the driver's seat for the title if the West champion comes in tired and banged up after three tough best-of-7 series.

I hate to say it, with my disgust for all teams east of Cleveland (and especially in the New England areas), but the Celtics are lookin' good for their first championship in over 20 years.

It already is a trainwreck - Boston fans just don't know it yet.

The Celtics just mortgaged their future on three 30+ guys that have never made the NBA Finals. (and in Allen's case, he was lucky to ever see the playoffs). Neither player even so much as led their team to the playoffs in any of the past two years.

Their point guard (Rondo) couldn't win a 3rd grade 3-point shooting contest. Their shooting guard (Allen) couldn't guard my grandmother. Their small forward (Pierce) is an injury prone ballhog who gets destroyed every time he plays against someone superior athletically (See Lebron). They have no center AND ZERO BENCH.

And now, all of a sudden, they're the best team in the East according to some commentators?

Former Clipper Cassell expected to officially join Celtics Tuesday

BOSTON -- Former Los Angeles Clippers point guard Sam Cassell cleared waivers on Monday night and was set to join the Celtics on Tuesday.
Cassell's agent, David Falk said that his client had signed the necessary paperwork and will bring it with him when he flies to Boston on Tuesday.
"He had some personal business he had to attend to in Baltimore. There was a death in the family," Falk said, according to the Boston Globe. "But he will be on his way up there and everything is done. He is really excited."

Garnett is a tough match up for anyone but Ben Wallace and Sheed probably possess the toughest two defenders for him to face...

But I agree that they will struggle defensively against the Pistons and Cavs...

Celtics' signing of Cassell official after he passes physical

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Boston Celtics hope they have the last piece of the championship puzzle now that veteran Sam Cassell has passed his physical and signed a contract.
Cassell is headed to Baltimore to attend the funeral of a family member and won't be available when the Celtics host the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night. He is expected to be available on Friday when Chicago visits Boston, but whether he plays will be the coach's decision.

Victory over Pistons would allow Celtics to clinch playoff spot


BOSTON -- Eight months after a blockbuster offseason made them instant NBA title contenders, the Celtics are on the verge of clinching a playoff spot Wednesday night.
Boston, which faces Detroit for the third time this season, can clinch a berth with a victory or with losses by New Jersey, Atlanta and Indiana.

The Celtics ( 46-12, .793) and Pistons (44-16, .733) have the NBA's two best records.

Newly acquired Sam Cassell will not be on the court for the Celtics, but he could play a large role come May when these teams have a chance to meet in the Eastern Conference finals.

might want to rethink that...with 2 minutes left to play they are owning the pistons up front...the boards and garnett has 31....celtics win by 12....50 rebounds...without pj brown and cassell.....ray allen only had 3 points also...i think boston proved tonight they are the team to beat in the east

Solid game by Boston, but Detroit didn't play anywhere near their best...But I do believe that Boston is the favorite, but the margin is not that big IMO...

Kevin Garnett scored a season-high 31 points and the Boston Celtics beat the Detroit Pistons 90-78 last night to become the first team to clinch an NBA playoff berth.
Boston took a four-game lead over Detroit in the Eastern Conference standings, as well as earning the homecourt tiebreaker over its closest competitor.
