Boise State in the NC game?

I posted this in response to a Boise State fan elsewhere, but will re-post here because it sums up my feelings on the subject:

This has nothing to do with Boise State having the ability to beat anyone on any given day. I will give them that. That is not in dispute.

At the same time, Appalachian State can beat Michigan, James Madison can beat Virginia Tech. Does that mean they deserve to be in the national title game? Clearly it does not.

The issue is the double standard.

I said it above but I will say it again. If Ohio State joined the MAC and played two competitive games out of conference, would people be okay with them playing in the title game if they went undefeated?

Absolutely not.

If Southern Cal joined the WAC and did exactly what Boise State is doing, would people be okay with them getting a title shot? No, it would be a huge step down in competition and they would get KILLED for it. No one would respect them. Yet somehow, Boise State deserves respect for what they do?

That is what is so damn frustrating.

On top of that, Boise State is 2-4 in bowl games in the last six years. Big time programs would get KILLED for that as well. Ohio State fans know this better than any team, but Ohio State lost to two #1 teams and a top 5 team. Boise has lost to East Carolina, Louisville, Boston College, and TCU.

DOUBLE STANDARD.

Ohio State and any other big time program would get laughed off the face of the earth for claiming they deserve a title shot for doing exactly what Boise State has done in the last six years. So why doesn?t Boise? Why the double standard?

I honestly think it is because they beat Oklahoma in an exciting fashion. THAT is what the bellyaching is about. It is ridiculous, it is pathetic, it is a joke, it is a double standard.

Boise has clearly come up with a template for gaming the system. They play one mid-level BCS school either at home or at a neutral site that they have all August to prepare for. Then, they and their supporters in the media declare it the greatest victory in the history of college football while they run back to their shitbox conference and start running up 55-7 scores allowing their starters to sit for half the game. Come bowl time, their team is fresh and uninjured and they have all month to prepare for their second test of the season.

At the risk of incurring the board's opprobrium, I really don't see any more problem with Boise State being in the NC game than I would, say, an undefeated Big East team being there. In fact, given the nature of the BCS, I'm not sure I see any problem whatsoever with Boise State playing in the championship game.

This is not a playoff, nor is it any sort of true determinant of the "best team in the USA." It's a bowl-centric system designed to provide one specific game in which the BCS powers-that-be declare the winner the "national champion." As such, I'm starting to see Pete Carroll's point - why should the Trojans not see themselves as having "repeated" as NC? I don't think the BCS NC designation is any more magic than the "UPI NC" of years past.

Exactly what I was thinking. I doubt if Ohio State joins the MAC and goes undefeated, they get considered for the NC. I looked through Boise's record throughout the 00's plus this year and it's really unimpressive. The win against Oregon last year (although they were obviously off to a slow start) and the bowl against Oklahoma are the only two I consider legit. ESPN can suck it.

Nothing speaks more of how Boise is trying to game the system than their agreeing to one game with UGA next year, when UGA is clearly down and might be transitioning to a new coaching staff and contrasting it with their negotiations with Nowledge, where they essentially put a poison pill into the negotiations demanding a million for each visit to Lincoln but a chump change payout for Nebraska's visit to Boise.

If Auburn loses to Alabama then wins the SECCG I think there will be a lot of pressure on voters to think twice before putting Boise in the NC game over a one-loss team from the conference that has won the last 4 NC games (and only once were they undefeated).

The Boise pom pom wavers in the media (paging Mr. Herbstreit) will defend their "right" to a title shot to the death, but the SEC would have a stronger case from a logical standpoint.

And what of the slew of one loss teams -- Okie State, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Stanford who will be pushed out of top bowl spots by TCU and Boise? Not to mention the game the Domers will insist they deserve? It's going to be a very interesting bowl bull session.

Utah beating Alabama in the Sugar Bowl also doesn't help.

Can Boise St. beat the top teams in the country? I think that they can beat any team in the country on any given day. However, they aren't in a big boy conference where they have to play LSU, Auburn, and Alabama in consecutive weeks. Can Boise St. beat those teams? I bet they could if things go right and only had to play one of those teams for the year. Can they beat all those teams in the same season?........probably not.

Utah never annoyed the shit out of me like Boysee has....

TCU honestly isn't that annoying either, but they are guilty by association somewhat....

Boise's hopes just took a body blow with Auburn's comeback. I don't see Carolina winning the SECCG, nor do I see Oregon losing to Zona and the other OSU. All things considered, I can accept Auburn-Oregon over some other match ups. I would be a Duck fan for a day.

I still would love to see Nevada win a shootout tonight.

Disagree.... Root for Auburn....

Accept 8 to 16 months of SEC crowing...

Wait for Death Penalty...

Accuse them all of being guilty be association...

Rinse and Repeat.

while I have no doubt Boise would stumble during the regular season in a big boy conference, I have zero doubt they would curb stomp a one-dimensional Auburn and very likely take Oregon to the wire.

Boise plays very disciplined defense and would absolutely expose Auburns secondary. Titus Young and Austin Pettis are salivating while they think about playing against that secondary....

Hmmmmm.....after todays game I'll have to disagree. As long as Cam is healthy, Auburn will spank Boise's azz all the way back to Idaho.
