Bobby Bowden (dadgummit)

Bobbah was just told that he can come back as "Ambassador", but that Jimbo gets to be the Head Coach - or very very, very, almost like the Head Coach, with Bowden putting face time after his nap, and maybe recruiting if it is before 6:30 pm.

In other words, it looks like they gave him as offer that would make the future wins go to Jimbo instead of Bobbah. But then, Bobby wants to be the all time winning-est coach so badly that he'd be willing to take the wins himself even if he was in a home on a ventilator.

It looks like they offered him a deal that is so bad and so humiliating and so likely to tarnish his right to any future wins that Bobby was to quit.

Stay tuned for more drama. I say he quits on Tuesday, and gets paid a half mil a year to show up for an hour a day and bull[censored] with the equipment guy.

ESPN is reporting that Bowden will retire tommorow. I do not like FSU at all, but to treat the guy that built your freakin' program this bad makes me hate them all the more. They could have given the old guy his last year, and let him leave with a little grace. I hope Fisher falls on his ass and sets that program back to where it was when BB took over.

Gator--this would be a good time to post that Bowden pep-talk video I know you love so dearly.

Eh, I'm all for Flast falling apart, but I don't give a shit about Bobbah getting any more seasons either. True he made FSU what it is (was), but it's past time for him to step aside (officially). I'm not sure he's had much of a say in what goes on with this team for some time now. JoPa might be past his days too, but he's still calling the shots and seems to still have some fire. Bobbah, on the other hand.... well... disinterested is the best word I can come up with.

In the golden years from 1987 through 2000 FSU never lost more than TWO games.

Since 2000 they have not lost less than three.

In the last 5 years they have lost 8 more games than the the total they lost in those 14 golden years.

If the truth be told it wouldn't surprise me to learn that they did give him his last year - and that this year was it.

They have been nothing if not patient.

Your probably right. I'm just sick of the fad in college football that says you must win at least 9-10 games every year, and win a NC at least once a decade (which BB actually did a decade ago...lol) to keep you job. A coach that has had as much success as BB did(considering FSU was basically South Florida at the point he took over) should have the opportunity to leave the way he wanted to. I honestly can't think of anyone in my lifetime who had a longer run than BB did during the 15 years you speak of. If someone builds your team up from scratch they should be allowed to finish their contract out.

As I said, be careful what you wish for, becuase I have a feeling Fisher is going to get his ass handed to him.

Attention successful head coaches looking to become the face of your respective programs: This is not how you want to go out.

He has a remarkable record and legacy at FSU, but a large majority of CFB fans will remember bumblin' bobbah from '01-'09 as opposed to the guy who finished in the Top 5 every year from '87-'00 and won a pair of National Titles.

I think a lot of you don't realize how much Bowden put his own family's interests over that of Florida State over the years. He screwed FSU for years insisting that his incompetent son be the OC, not violating nepotism rules by a joke of a Chinese Wall having him report to someone other than the head coach. As their offensive production fell and fell and fell, he threatened to quit if his boy was not retained. Finally, instead of being fired for incompetency, Bobbah blackmailed the boosters into giving his son a half million in severance pay for being bad at what he did.

Anybody ever see any other OC get a reward for sucking and being let go?

As he grew more senile, he refused to do what was right for his program. It is not Bowden University, but FSU. For some time he has only had his own interests, and his family's interests at heart.

Edit: We need Bill to chime in on this.

If I were looking for an analogy I would think of the self made man who made a company out of nothing. Nobody can fire him till he is ready to go - unless he goes public.

Bobby may have made FSU, but like Fat Charley he cashed all those checks that got fatter and fatter with the teams success. Those fans and alumni who funded the program became his shareholders who grew tired of the mismanagement you mention.

If he really put the program first he wouldn't need prompting to hang it up.

It seems like only a few years ago that Steve19 made a tremendous contribution to the Colts. Although it hurt so much at the time, and Northland area grade school football was all the much poorer, I now realize that moving on provided me a path for personal growth and happiness in life.

Bobbah should do the same.

To me, this is all about the incredible dishonesty of it all.

Folks, we're not talking about a principled man like Woody Hayes, lovable rascal that he was. We're not talking about a man who holds high ethics and a respected distance from scandal. This is not your grandfather.

We are talking about the head coach of Free Shoes University. This is a man who earned an obscene salary in the family business and didn't mind conniving, cheating, and bending academic rules beyond breaking point in order to win, on the field if not in life.

Even if he had won more games than Joe Paterno, he wouldn't be the winningest coach ever in college football by any measure I am willing to use.

Florida State doesn't owe him anything. He extracted every cent they might have owed him long ago. In fact, he may owe them quite a bit.

Knowing absolutely nothing about FSU, how is Bowden's retirement going to change anything in terms of the product on the field? The staff remains unchanged. Will Jimbo hire new coordinators and change the direction of the program? All the cogs in the mediocrity machine are still in place, just with a different engineer. Am I missing something?

I guess people in Tallahassee don't care but YOUR NEW HEAD COACH IS NAMED FREAKIN' JIMBO.

2005 would have been a good season to hang up the ole hat for Bobbah.
