Bill Davis (LB Coach Arizona Cardinals)

Worst unit on the field and it's not really close

Bingo. Coming into the season, it was generally thought that Baker would be a first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. That now seems like a joke, as he's generally a liability. Booker has played even worse--on two TDs yesterday, it was his guy that caught the pass, and he wasn't even in the same zip code. Worley had a breakout year last year, and this year he looks like a liability as well--missing tackle, bad pass interference penalty yesterday, and generally is playing out of position.

Not great, Bob.

Yes, I think Billy Davis should have a meeting with "The Bobs"

"What would you say you do here?"

I cannot believe that some of you are blaming the coach of the LB's. Sometimes it might be the scheme(Schiano and Meyer) or the players not doing what the coaches ask them to do. First, it was do not hire Davis because he could not recruit. After that was proven wrong it is now get rid of Davis because he cannot coach LB's. Maybe some of these players reached their peak last season.

No matter how you want to phrase it davis is responsible for lb play. He determines playing time and decides who plays where. So Davis has given us an MLB who is an OLB and packages of LBs that are not up to snuff. Harrison might be great but this year he’s been a liability on the field and that is coaching. Scheme plays a roll but coaching is more important if these guys know their roll and stay in position the scheme is fine but they seem lost or trying to make the hero play a d end up out of position a lot of times.

You might be right. But the reason we're so quick to blame Davis is because he doesn't exactly have the stellar track record / credibility that other coaches on staff have, that help to shield them from blame.

Kevin Wilson's offense was anemic against Oklahoma, but we can look back at his body of work and identify that as an outlier. Davis, on the other hand, hasn't really shown before that he has what it takes to be a successful coach at the collegiate level, so we have to judge him on each game. And thus far, LB play has been very disappointing.

Whether that is on Davis or the players is up to Urban to decide. Given our monstrous recruiting, however, it seems more likely that our LB struggles come from inadequate coaching.

There are plenty of brilliant individuals who have failed as college coaches because they could not effectively coach 18-20 year olds, or come up with a scheme that 18-20 year old college students can effectively carry out.

On the other hand, Alabama is successful because, not only do they recruit well, they coach so well that every player on their field (regardless of Wonderlic score) knows exactly where they have to be and what they have to do.

The unit is poor at coverage schemes. That could also be an indictment on our schemes because we dont play zone, ever. These guys should be playing zone under man or some variation because they are terrible in coverage. Why wouldnt they know their assignments at this point in the season if it isnt scheme or unit problems? By all accounts they are supposed to be the best athletes we've had at the position in a lot of years. Either other guys need to play or the scheme needs to change.

Well I mean the LBs were pretty good last year and now they're crap this year. This is with largely the same unit as last year too. Seems pretty cut and dry to me.

Our defensive philosophy and scheme haven't changed much for 4 years really, and last year the defense was pretty dang good. In particular, the LB play has been solid for years, and last year was no exception. All of these guys also played last year. Worley moving from to M from S shouldn't make much of a difference at all. Baker was lights out last year under the same scheme. And remember, Booker was the starter before he was injured to give Baker a chance to be a star last year. So we have three proven experienced LBs that suddenly look like clowns this year. They should be even better this year than last because they have more experience and should be stronger as well.

So if the scheme has proven to work, the players have proven to be more than capable, then all of the sudden there is a change in performance, you have to look at what changed in the process to degrade the performance. Davis is the only variable.

Got some splainin to do

Nice breakdown:

In the NFL, coaches typically spend a great deal of time identifying the tendencies of a particular opponent and designing schemes and adjustments for each situation. It's on each position coach to then ensure their group knows each of those adjustments, which is largely done in meeting rooms and walk-throughs.

What doesn't happen very often in the NFL anymore is skill development, as most players are expected to arrive in NFL camps as nearly-finished products ready to contribute on day one. As such, it's quite difficult not to notice that the units which struggled most against the Hawkeyes are led by men who were most recently working at the professional level before joining Urban Meyer's staff.

Greg Schiano is in charge of the safeties in addition to his duties as coordinator, and Billy Davis, who called the defensive plays in San Francisco, Arizona, and Philadelphia, leads the linebackers. While both units lost star players from a year ago in Malik Hooker and Raekwon McMillan, training camp opened three months ago, and the kinds of failures seen on Saturday should be inexcusable at this point in the season.
