Bill Davis (LB Coach Arizona Cardinals)

URBAN MEYER FELT COMFORTABLE HIRING BILL DAVIS AT OHIO STATE DESPITE NO RECRUITING EXPERIENCE

Urban Meyer took a risk when he hired Bill Davis.

The two go way back to their college playing days at Cincinnati, sure, and Davis has over 20 years of coaching experience in the NFL. But there is something Davis never did in his career to this point, something Meyer calls the lifeblood of any college program.

Davis never recruited before he got to Ohio State.

“It’s brand new to me,” Davis said recently in his first meeting with the media since he was hired Dec. 21. “But like I told Coach Meyer, that’s a positive. You tell me how you want it done and that’s how you’re going to get it done.”

The early returns have been overwhelmingly positive.

Recruits targeted by Davis thus far don't seem fazed by Davis’ lack of experience; his long tenure in the NFL is rather appealing. Meyer himself said Davis hit the ground running.

“It’s all work ethic and relationships and he’s been great at both so far,” Meyer said.

But wasn’t there a bit of apprehension from Meyer, despite the fact he and Davis go way back? There had to be, right?

“It’s always a concern,” Meyer said. “There’s not a chance [Davis would be hired] if I don’t know him and know what kind of work ethic he has."

"Outstanding work ethic and the [defensive] unit leader in his group, Greg Schiano, is as good a recruiter as there is in the country. You’ve got Kerry Coombs in there too and Larry Johnson so it’s going very well.”

BILLY DAVIS NEVER RECRUITED BEFORE URBAN MEYER HIRED HIM AT OHIO STATE BUT YOU'D NEVER BE ABLE TO TELL

Admittedly, Urban Meyer had concerns about Billy Davis’ lack of recruiting experience when he hired him to replace Luke Fickell as Ohio State’s next linebackers coach, but the Buckeyes’ head coach still felt confident Davis would be just fine on the recruiting trail.

“It’s all work ethic and relationships and that’s the kind of person he is,” Meyer said in March.

Well, if the last two weeks were any indication, Meyer’s instincts were right.

Davis landed his first big recruiting win May 16 when Dallas Gant announced his pledge to the Buckeyes. Ohio State beat out Notre Dame to land the nation’s fifth-ranked outside linebacker.

Then, on Friday night, Davis landed what was perhaps an even bigger victory on the recruiting trail when the Buckeyes received a commitment from four-star linebacker Teradja Mitchell. Mitchell, the No. 2-ranked inside linebacker in the country, picked Ohio State over longtime favorite Florida State.

Two-plus weeks, two top-rated linebackers. Not bad for a guy who never recruited before.

“I’ve never done recruiting so it’s brand new to me,” Davis said in March. “But like I told Coach Meyer, that’s a positive. You tell me how you want it done and that’s how you’re going to get it done.”

Not sure if it was coaching or missed assignment, but Worely was out of position often on the passes over the middle.

Ozone has an interesting article in which, on that TD pass to the OU fullback, it was not only Worley being out of position, but also Baker who failed to hit the fullback at all, instead allowing him to get a free release into the secondary where he was wide open. On a similar play, Harrison hit the RB trying to get out of the backfield, throwing the play off, and that was the play that resulted in Bosa's sack of Mayfield at the 1-yard line.
