ORD - do you really think more is coming? The way the story is written by that "bastion" of journalism, ESPN, it seems the 500K and 1 1st round pick, or a 2nd and 3rd pick is all that is applied as punishment.

Papa, Weis was caught admitting they knew all their signals in 2000. Plus as someone else said, if they're cheating in the regular season against an overmatched Jets squad who knows they cheat, I would imagine they'd cheat when it's for all the marbles.
we already know they cheat in the snow.

serious question though.....why is the draft pick penalty contingent on them making the playoffs? if you're going to penalize them, penalize them.

No idea, I wondered that too, if they make the playoffs it's going to be low first round, not to mention they have two first-rounders this year. One of them being the 49ers, so it's not like this is a real penalty anyways.

The fine is pocket change to both Belichick and the Patriots. And they still get a first round pick next year so the loss of their "Other" first round pick is meaningless. :shake: :shake:

I would've expected a suspension and a fine. Or better yet banned from the post season like if it was college ball. I'm sure that would deter any further cheating from any team.

I find it hard to believe they let them keep the game. All my life I played if you cheat you lose. very disappointed in the penalties. I agree with those of you who questioned why they made the draft pick dependant on the playoffs.

This penalty is hardly a deterrent. Fines are pointless because any NFL franchise would gladly pay $750,000 for a win. In this case, the picks are not all that important, in light of the fact that they will still keep one of their two first round picks. Their team is so deep in the first place that they won't miss whatever picks they lose

Wins and draft picks are the currency of the NFL, and since the draft picks will barely have an effect on this franchise, the failure to impose forfeiture of the game is a disappointment. Hell, if they're gonna get to keep the win, then they may as well keep taping signals the rest of the year. It's not as if there are that many more picks that can be taken away - may as well rack up the wins.

I mean losing a first round pick sucks. I don't think you can underestimate the fact that they could lose the chance to draft a potential starter, or great player, when there are plenty in the first round.

And 500,000 is still a ton of money. I know the organization will cover Belichick's ass, but a combined $750,000, losing a first round pick, and basically being convicted cheaters and having it displayed publically is a decent punishment.

2000? Did you mean 2005 or am I missing something?

What kills me about the Jets thing too is that he is coaching against Mangini who was an assistant coach of his just a few years ago.

Agreed, but I would have still rather seen them forfeit the game rather than suffer the financial losses. The draft pick loss is great though, and justified.

Yeah, I think we can safely assume that's how they busted them. BB is a bitter, vengeful individual, Mangenius knew that odds are he would be doing that.

I don't follow the NFL too much and didn't read down far enough in the thread to see that his punishment had just been handed down, so I think you're probably right that's all there is. The draft pick hurts though, far more than the money.

I forgot they had an extra first-round pick. Now, this hardly seems like punishment at all. It just seems like a cheap business expense.

Since the Browns already lost their first round pick, and they aren't going to make the playoffs, they may as well invest in some camera equipment. That way, we won't have any first day picks, and Romeo can have some of his undeserved salary taken away.
