ESPN - Belichick fined $500K for taping Jets' signals - NFL
NEW YORK -- New England coach Bill Belichick was fined the NFL maximum of $500,000 Thursday and the Patriots were ordered to pay $250,000 for videotaping an opponent's offensive and defensive signals.

Commissioner Roger Goodell also ordered the team to give up next year's first-round draft choice if it reaches the playoffs and second- and third-round picks if it doesn't.

Slap on the wrist.

Agreed, but the loss of the First Round pick is nice. That is a big loss for any team.

Fucking cheaters. I was reading that some of the players from the 2005 Eagles team that lost to them in the Super Bowl are really starting to question the changes that the Pats made on offense in the Second half of that game. How they were combating their blitzes perfectly with screens and gained about 6x as many yards and scored on 4 of 5 drives. Makes you wonder if they were cheating then too. I really wish this asshole would have cheated when he was the Browns coach, maybe then Cleveland could have seen a Super Bowl.

Papa, Weis was caught admitting they knew all their signals in 2000. Plus as someone else said, if they're cheating in the regular season against an overmatched Jets squad who knows they cheat, I would imagine they'd cheat when it's for all the marbles.

I was really hoping he would be told to get off the sidelines for say two or four games, in addition to the above. But, as I think on this, the outcome is perfect, if, and I mean if, the fate of the Patriots really did hinge on any advantage they squeezed from their Digicam footage of the respective lines waggles and waves.

Now, if the Patriots start losing games they would otherwise be expected to win and Brady starts looking mortal, the questions about BB's presumed genius status will gain some weight.

It's not as bad as Vick's actions, which were not only criminal but also inhumane acts.

It does, however, strike at the integrity of the game in the same way a gambling scandal would. As such, he should sit out a full year w/o pay.

Do I think that's going to happen? Not a chance in hell. OTOH, Goodell has been coming down hard on black players (Vick, Pacman, Tank Johnson), can he really afford to give a white coach a slap on the wrist for actions which call into question the integrity of the on field product? Probably because I think the NFL is just that arrogant. Stay tuned. This is only going to get more interesting.
