Big Ten Power Rankings

That 1-3-1 Beilein runs is a pain in the ass. It seems like they are a lot more comfortable in it this season. Sims & Harris are a fine 1-2 punch. It'll be interesting to see if anyone can step up as a third option. Novak has hit 12-23 from 3 the last 4 games after only attempting 5 in the first 4.

I've got my ballot in.

I haven't seen many of these teams play, though I've been keeping up with the write-ups around the league. Until they lose, it's kinda hard to knock OSU not being either #1 or #2 in the Big Ten. I'm not drinking the TSUN kool-aid yet, but I AM drinking the Big Ten kool-aid. Instead of a strong 3-4 teams, I believe we could be 7-strong at the top with TSUN and Minnesota joining the likes of MSU, Purdont, Illinois, Wiscy, and OSU. Should be a VERY entertaining season in the league this year.

I don't think many of us have seen many of these teams play this early and probably just like yourself have gone off the write ups and the scores of the games. I think we will get a better feel for these teams when we quit watching so much football. Totally agree with you regarding the Big 10 and possible depth.

OK, now you're just trying to annoy me.

I would have ranked Wisconsin 4th instead of 3rd, but I figured you would weigh in w/ your opinion, so I wanted to balance things out.

Penn State over Wisconsin when the Nittany Lions just lost to Temple at home and previously lost to Rhode Island on a neutral floor? They're getting beaten up by mid level A-10 teams.

Meanwhile, UW led most of the way @ Marquette but got key players in minor foul trouble like Landry and Hughes, Bo Ryan got way too over-protective with them, and it cost the Badgers the game.

A ranking of 8th is neither justified by recent performance nor preseason projection.

I guess there's no minimum college basketball knowledge requirement though so you're entitled to your opinion, as ridiculous as it usually is.

My case against UW--they've beaten absolutley no one of consequence, struggled with Va. Tech, beat Iona (yes, Iona) by a whopping 2 points, struggled with 4-3 Long Beach St., and got absolutely smacked by UConn (who barely escaped mighty Buffalo). I think it goes without saying that UM, OSU, Mich. St., and Purdue should be above UW right now based on that alone. As for Illinois, they crushed Georgia and beat Vanderbilt, both wins that are better than anything UW's done. And Illinois is 7-1. Minny's 8-0, and while they haven't played any world beaters, UW's beaten no one better, and I give Minny the nod for being undefeated right now. Penn St. has the same record as UW, and winning at Georgia Tech (who is 5-1, I might add) is more impressive than any win that UW has.

Take off the red and white glasses and you'll see that UW hasn't done anything as of yet. Not saying that they won't by season's end, but at this point, there's no way are in the top 5 in the Big Ten.

That's your primary measuring stick and yet you ranked Minnesota 4th.

These are Minnesota's wins:

Concordia University St. Paul
Bowling Green
Georgia St.
@ Colorado St.
Eastern Washington
North Dakota St.
Virginia
Cornell

A real murderer's row there. Every team in the conference besides Indiana would probably be undefeated with that schedule.

Besides, part of your argument was Wisconsin "struggled" with Virginia Tech even though they never trailed in the ballgame. The same Va Tech (@home BTW) who finished 4th in the ACC last year, returns everybody of note but Deron Washington, and lost to Xavier (#9 in the country) on a halfcourt buzzer beater after seizing the lead late on a neutral court.

Stop seeing red when you think of Wisconsin.

So what irks you about Wisconsin personally? You find the style of play boring (which would be erroneous)? Bo lobbies for calls vehemently while he personifies a Badger? Spill it!

Here is how I ranked them. tOSU and Michigan have some impressive wins. 1-5 is a pretty tight race. Not enough games have been played yet against strong competition for any kind of real judgment to be made. Should be a strong year for the Big Ten though.

1. Ohio State
2. Michigan
3. Michigan State
4. Purdue
5. Wisconsin
6. Illinois
7. Minnesota
8. Penn State
9. Northwestern
10. Iowa
11. Indiana

I think it is way too early in the season for anyone to get riled up over our poor rankings. The majority of us don't even know what players have missed certain games because of injuries and how coaches are trying to find the right rotations for when the Big 10 season starts. I think once the Big 10 season begins then we really can bite at each other:biggrin2:
My apologies to OBJ for missing his call on scUm but I think they will be up and down this season just like last season. However, I will reserve my judgment until the Big 10 season starts:biggrin2:

I never said that was my primary measuring stick. Since you apparently only take issue with my ranking Minny ahead of UW, I guess you've seen the light and admit that UW should be ranked, at highest, 7th. Notwithstanding your concession, I still believe that Minny's resume so far is more impressive than UW's.

Sorry--I thought we these were power rankings for this season. My mistake. Va Tech (who has only beaten Gardner Webb, Mt. St. Mary's, Fordham, Elon and Navy) isn't a quality win, in my opinion.

So because I don't kowtow to UW and put them at #3 in the power rankings despite their lack of a resume vis-a-vis other Big Ten teams, as I set forth in my previous post, I am irked personally by UW? If UW does anything of consequence this year, I'll gladly move them up. By the way, I'm still waiting for your excuses as to why UW beat powerhouse Iona by 2 points and why they were housed by a UConn team that almost lost to Buffalo.

This is why I say not to take the power rankings so seriously at beginning of the season

link

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Freshman guard Anthony Tucker, Iowa's leading scorer, was suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules.
Coach Todd Lickliter made the announcement Sunday in a release that did not specify what the violation was.
