I have a very difficult time putting Minnesota over Purdue because of the beating that Purdue gave Wisconsin and one of Purdue's losses in the Big 10 was when they did not have two of their starters. I also think that Wisconsin is probably the third best team in the conference but Illinois is right up there. I do not think that Minnesota is one of the top four teams in the Big 10. Maybe when they play at home but certainly not on the road. I know that some of you are going to say it is difficult to win on the road for all Big 10 teams but I just think that Minnesota's is a much better team at home than on the road.

Our Buckeyes need to start improving quickly. They can not wait for Lighty's return to start winning Big 10 games or they will be too far behind and sometimes the Selection Committee does not take injuries into consideration.

 Here are the teams I would rank ahead of UW (12-4, one impressive win: @ UM) right now in the Big Ten Power Rankings:

MSU: Record 13-2. Impressive wins: Texas (a team that UW lost to at home, I might add, and MSU beat in what was for all relevant purposes, an away game at Houston), @ Minnesota, Ohio State, Kansas. Better record, better quality wins. This one is easy in choosing MSU over UW.

Minnesota: Record 15-1. Impressive wins: Louisville, Ohio State. Again, better record and two better wins than any on UW's resume. An easy choice here.

Illinois: Record 14-2. Impressive wins: @ Purdue, Missouri, @ Vanderbilt. Again, better record and better wins than UW's.

Ohio State: Record 11-3. Impressive wins: @ Miami, Notre Dame (in for all relevant purposes an away game), Butler. Better record (winning percentage-wise) and better overall resume.

Purdue: Record 12-4. Impressive wins: Boston College, Davidson. Same record as UW, but has better quality wins. Also beat UW head-to-head.

UM: Record 13-3. Impressive wins: Duke, UCLA, Illinois. UW won head-to-head, but UM has a better overall record and much better quality wins. UM also is ranked right now, whereas UW is not. UM gets this one by a slim margin.

In summary, take off the red and white glasses, and you'll realize that UW hasn't done much this year so far. I'm going on current record and overall resume in ranking the teams, not some sentimental feelings for how Big Ten teams have produced or not produced in past years. If you think UW is entitled to a higher ranking based on what you perceive to be its brand name, maybe a Wisconsin board is where you should look. This is a Buckeye board, and you should expect that UW won't be ranked high here if they don't produce on the court, as they have not done (at least, not relative to their Big Ten counterparts) so far this season.

My rankings as of Monday morning:

  1. Michigan State (1)
  2. Minnesota (4)
  3. Michigan (5)
  4. Purdue (3)
  5. Wisconsin (2)
  6. Illinois (6)
  7. Ohio State (7)
  8. Penn State (9)
  9. Northwestern (8)
  10. Iowa (10)
  11. Indiana (11)

That's all I got. In hindsight I should have ranked Indiana #1 just because I really enjoy the movie Hoosiers.

No way we can give Indiana a higher rank , and any one who does should be dinged by every voter. :wink2:

Northwestern has dominated Purdon't all night, but they are doing their best to puke it away. 4pt game with 2:30 left.

Purdue eeks it out in Evanston after being down double digits in the 2nd half. Ugly win, but I'll take it. Always hate having to go on the road to play teams like PSU and Northwestern, they are scrappy as hell.

However I honestly think Purdue finishes 3/4/5 area in the conference. MSU definitely has the pole position right now. We really overachieved last year against a weaker league and are still playing with a bunch of Sophs. The preseason expectations were a little unrealistic.

No doubt. This league ridiculous this year. I think the league champ will have at least 3 or 4 losses. Any road win over ANYONE is HUGE. PSU is very tough with Battle, Pringle, and Cornley. NW is extremely scrappy and Moore and Coble are very good players. IU might be down for now and might be the only team that people could count a "W" against...but they will be back. And the league will be even better when they do.

I've been hearing more guys on ESPN saying how good the Big 10 is this year, how they've never seen this many good coaches in the league at one time, etc. We are finally starting to get some respect from national media.

Purdue 75, Iowa 53 -- Iowa is not very good and will struggle to win a road game in the league. They should be able to get a few home wins though. PU is finally starting to shoot better percentage wise.

NW 74, Minn 65 -- Big win for NW over ranked Minny. They are tough at home and will give teams fits with their 1-3-1 defense. This really hurts Minny, they needed to win this to keep pace with MSU. Minny led at half and shooting went cold in the 2nd.

MSU 63, Illinois 57 -- Ill led at half and MSU stormed back in the 2nd. Illinois is tough. MSU finds ways to make plays at the end of big games. MSU retains conference lead but Ill has to be frustrated, they were leading a good part of the 2nd half.

PSU 65, IU 55 -- PSU gets first ever win at Assembly Hall. IU continues to struggle and turn the ball over way too much.
