Big Ten Power Rankings

I hope you do know that you're #3 ranked team (Illinois) lost to your #5 ranked team (Michigan) which had lost to your #6 ranked team

Yeah, I knew that Ill. lost to UM when I ranked the teams. However, I still thought Illinois' overall body of work (of late especially) was better than UM's. In particular, I thought the win at Purdue was huge, and they also recently beat Mizzou, who is 13-2. Then again, that was before Purdue lost at PSU (albeit shorthanded). As for UM vs. UW, I ranked UM higher again based on body of work--UM is 1-1 against Duke and has beaten UCLA, and of UW's 11 wins (they won their 12th after I submitted my rankings), none is all that impressive. UM is UW's best win, and UM isn't ranked. In short, I always go for the entire body of work argument--what has a team done all year long.

Then again, in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls, UM is higher than Illinois, so maybe I got that one wrong. But both are higher than UW, so I'm pretty sure I got that one right.

One thing I like about Wiscy along with their discipline is the way they play big physical ball.
I think they will give a lot of teams more than they can handle and that all that remains to see is how much they progress this year.

Minnesota wins by 3 at Iowa last night. Saw an interesting item last night during the game.

Devan Bawinkel of Iowa (hit 5 three's against OSU last Wednesday), before last night's game, had attempted 57 shots on the season. Every one of them was a 3-point attempt. No 2-point attempts, no free throw attempts. He did attempt a 2-pointer last night (must have had a toe on the line or something), so he's now 0-1 from 2 and 24-61 from 3. Ridiculous. He makes Diebler look like Dwayne Wade.

Since the beginning of the season, I have had Wisconsin in my top 4 when it comes to the Power Rankings. There is no way a team with that much talent coming back can lose so many OOC games before the Big 10 season begins. I was curious as to whether or not you had any idea why they were performing so poorly before the start of the Big 10. Does Bo like to tinker with his lineups during the three Big 10 schedule:huh: and is this year any exception. I can remember them being this bad before the start of the Big 10 season in prior years.

What year is this anyhow:biggrin2:

Well, you're in the upper echelon of posters (until the next time I disagree with you, of course :)). I was more addressing the average poster, fan, and media member who is still seemingly oblivious to this phenomenon. Or someone whose combination of bias and ignorance is ever-present, like buckeyesin07's. His ability to compartmentalize and employ double standards I find quite fascinating psychologically.

To nip overreaction in the bud, I'd like to make it known beforehand I believe Wisconsin will probably lose at Purdue this weekend with or without Hummel and Kramer. A lot of Wisconsin's success this season will be tied to the the quickness and dual threat ability of the opposing backcourt, since Jason Bohannon has lead feet, and there is no palatable alternative at the 2 that I can see to turn to when match-up is a problem. Bohannon has to guard one of Jackson or Moore.....and the result won't be pretty (unless Moore has an uncharacteristically cold shooting night). Penn State exploited the match-up because they have Pringle and Battle. But Purdue and PSU might be the only two teams in the conference that could create a serious problem w/ two good, smaller, quick guards who can shoot.

Since there was no waltz dance contest on last night, I decided to watch this game and I just can't believe Ohio State's luck or maybe it is Iowa's luck when they play Ohio State. Every time I watch that team play, they miss the majority of their three-pointers but bring in the scarlet and gray and they will light it up from behind the three-point line. Of course, we do sit back and usually give them pretty good looks. Minnesota pressured them a little more than we did.

Oh, litlbuck, and to answer your question, it's not that he tinkers with lineups per say, but he puts a greater emphasis on teaching in the out of conference than does he in conference.

For example he wants to instill into players to refrain from fouling. So he held Hughes out w/ 4 fouls until 1:30 to 2 minutes left in the Marquette game. There's clearly no competitive advantage in that specific game to holding arguably your best player out until a game is virtually out of striking distance. In the Texas game he similarly held key players out with very minor trouble given the amount of time left. But then against Michigan he refrained from subbing Landry when he committed his 3rd foul very early in the 2nd half. That drastically broke tendency from what he was doing out of conference. In that particular game the move in part resulted in Wisconsin breaking the game wide open. We went on a big run before Landry received his 4th.

Also, it was very clear from the beginning of the season that Jon Leuer was one of Wisconsin's top 2-3 players. But he'd get yanked because there were flaws in his performance on defense and the boards. He wouldn't be aware in help defense and didn't always block out on the boards. Still, because of how efficient of an offensive player he was, and what was the alternative, he had a positive impact on the team. Well, in the conference season his PT has increased by about 7 meaningful minutes, and the teaching technique appears to have worked because his defense and rebounding ability has discernibly improved.
