Big Ten Power Rankings

It was 0-0 real early on.

:p

Wisky is picking up steam.

Should anyone be surprised by this? Up until the last season or two, Wisconsin was rubbish during the preseason out of conference slate. I remember for the longest time I wasn't sure if our best road or neutral win during the Bo Ryan era was against Rutgers? Old Dominion? Then we turn it on during the Big Ten conference regular and postseason. And there are a myriad of reasons for that. Takes time to integrate into the system, Bo's not teaching as much and putting a greater emphasis on winning because there's a title at stake, fewer teams to force the Badgers' mediocre ball handling and quickness into turnovers which go unpunished, the Badgers are ridiculously tough at home, etc.

This week's rankings with last week's in parantheses:

  1. Michigan State (2)
  2. Wisconsin (7)
  3. Purdue (1)
  4. Minnesota (3)
  5. Michigan (4)
  6. Illinois (6)
  7. Ohio State (5)
  8. Northwestern (8)
  9. Penn State (9)
  10. Iowa (10)
  11. Indiana (11)

I may have jumped Wisconsin too high too fast but no one else besides MSU is playing to their level at this point. After all, these are "Power" rankings. :)

Does Purdue belong that high at 0-2 with losses to #6 and #9? I'd put 'em like 6th or 7th.

...and Wisconsin has been rubbish during the NCAA tournament. When was the last season in which they've not underachieved in the NCAA tournament when you take into account their seed?

2008: Seeded #3, lost in Sweet 16 -- Underachieved
2007: Seeded #2, lost in round of 32 -- Underachieved
2006: Seeded #9, lost in first round -- Wash
2005: Seeded #6, lost in Elite Eight -- Overachieved (but were the benficiary of upsets, beating only #11, #14, and #10 seeds)
2004: Seeded #6, lost in round of 32 -- Wash
2003: Seeded #5, lost in Sweet 16 -- Wash (but were the beneficiary of only having to beat a #13 seed in the round of 32)
2002: Seeded #8, lost in round of 32 -- Wash
2001: Seeded #6, lost in first round -- Underachieved
2000: Seeded #8, lost in Final Four -- Overachieved
1999: Seeded #5, lost in first round -- Underachieved
1997: Seeded #7, lost in first round -- Underachieved

So in the last ten or so years, they've underachieved in the NCAA tournament over 45% of the time.

I'd probably have them below Illinois, but the loss was at PSU and without Hummel and Kramer where they came back from a big first half deficit before losing it late.

I had mentioned the postseason performances also in my original post so as not to fuel the fire of posters like you, but edited it out for irrelevancy to the topic. I'm well aware of what has happened during that period and have lamented that fact to Badger fans....so you wasted your time searching those results. Postseason OOC performance in the past should have nothing to do with how you project teams will fare in the Big Ten this season. But you don't seem to be able to separate the two. Thanks for proving your bias against the Badgers continually that I knew you possessed from the first time I read one of your posts. Take a time machine and travel back to 2007, only to never post again, just like your username promised. The only thing more rubbish than Wisconsin's postseason OOC performances are your messages.

Since the beginning of the season, I have had Wisconsin in my top 4 when it comes to the Power Rankings. There is no way a team with that much talent coming back can lose so many OOC games before the Big 10 season begins. I was curious as to whether or not you had any idea why they were performing so poorly before the start of the Big 10. Does Bo like to tinker with his lineups during the three Big 10 schedule:huh: and is this year any exception. I can remember them being this bad before the start of the Big 10 season in prior years.

What year is this anyhow:biggrin2:
