Big Ten Men's Tournament 2007

if the hypothetical osu/wisky game is close and osu loses, ohio state will most likely retain a one-seed. then again, if unc, ucla, and kansas absolutely dominate, all bets are off. if wisky loses in a close game, it will depend on how unc, kansas, florida, and possibly ucla fare in their conference tournaments. if the loser of the osu/wisky loses by a landslide, which is highly unlikely, i see the loser assuming a two-seed. of course, this last possibility also hinges upon how the other top teams fared.

even this late in the season, few things are absolute. what i'm worried about most is ohio state being the #4 or number #5 overall seed, with the #5 overall seed being the lowest that ohio state will drop.

how do you figure UNC in that? they are ranked 8th and there would have to be a lot of losses by teams above them for them to get a N01 seed. Ohio state would have to get blown out by someone early to lose the n01 IMO. And even that might not do it.

I really wonder how much weight the Selection Committee gives to the rankings of teams by the media and the coaches poll. Sometimes, I think the Selection Committee uses their own "weighting" method.

i figured unc into that because they're unc, they're playing in arguably the best conference, they have an excellent record against top-50 rpi teams, and... they're unc. furthermore, ranked ahead of them are two teams from the big 10 and three from the big 10. say, for example, that ohio state handily beats wisky and texas wins the big 12 tournament. unc would then jump a bunch of teams. also, there is no way that the committee will give memphis a higher overall seed.

again, there are just so many possibilities. unc is definitely in the race for a #1 seed. ohio state and ucla are the closest to being locks for #1 seeds. however, there is no such thing as a lock right now. there are still too many possibilities.

I think so too but UNC has lost 6 games and to me that says they aren't a n01 seed. In fact by any weighting system you have seen I don't think they deserve one.
their " name" can only carry so much weight.

Their name is what I thought you were going to say, and I agree it does carry some weight. I personally don't think they deserve it. I would prefer they would have played their way into it. They did play in argueably the best conference and lost five games in it. To me that's not a n01 seed.

well, if you're going by number of losses, memphis is a #1 seed. no reasonable person would have them as a #1 seed, though. you have to look at schedules. also, there are two teams ranked ahead of unc that have five losses. if unc wins their conference tournament, florida and texas a&m don't win their tournaments (giving them six losses), and osu handily beats wisky, unc then probably jumps right to the #4 overall seed.

Put that way we are in agreement as I previously said there would have to be a lot of losses by teams ahead of them for them to get it

sheesh. i was just explaining to you how i included unc in the mix of teams that have shots at #1 seeds. did i ever state that unc will get a #1 seed. did i even state that unc will likely get a #1 seed. to claim that unc has no shot at a #1 seed is myopic.

I agree with Buckeyeboy on this. I think if Wisconsin and Ohio State both make it to the final game of the tournament whoever wins that game will get the #1 seed. I am not saying that the loser will get a #2 seed because the loser can also get a #1 seed.

I wonder if Gene Smith has to leave the room when they talk about Wisconsin.

The brackets are made before the game ends.

Make it to the BTCCG and we are a guarnteed #1.

Big Ten bunched up in middle

RICK GANO

Associated Press

CHICAGO - Say you're Ohio State, ranked No. 1 in the country, all but assured of a top seed in the NCAA tournament. What's in it for the Buckeyes when the Big Ten tournament starts Thursday?
Time for a tuneup, maybe. And hope - make that pray - that no one, especially Greg Oden, gets hurt.
How about Wisconsin, which also held the No. 1 spot briefly before faltering a bit in the stretch? Perhaps get ready for the NCAA tournament, tweak your lineup and work on the necessary adjustments without injured rebound leader Brian Butch.
A mild miracle would be a must for Northwestern, Minnesota and Penn State - they'd need to win four in a row over four days like Iowa did in 2001 to be participants in selection Sunday.

Cont'd...
