BIG TEN MEN'S TOURNAMENT: The middle five

Thursday, March 08, 2007

The Big Ten Tournament begins today with five teams in the middle of the pack fighting for their NCAA Tournament lives. No. 1 Ohio State, No. 2 Wisconsin and No. 3 Indiana are in while No. 9 Minnesota, No. 10 Penn State and No. 11 Northwestern, barring miraculous runs to the tournament title, are out.
With the league likely to earn between four and seven tournament spots, that leaves five teams fighting for as few as one bid and as many as four, making the 10th Big Ten Tournament something of an NCAA play-in. Here are the cases, and hopes, for the Big Ten's middle five.

Big hopes, big agendas on horizon for Big Ten

March 8, 2007
By Rick Gano the associated press
CHICAGO -- Say you're Ohio State, ranked No. 1 in the country, all but assured a top seed in the NCAA Tournament. What's in it for the Buckeyes when the Big Ten Tournament starts today?
Time for a tuneup, maybe. And hope -- make that pray-- no one, especially Greg Oden, gets hurt.
How about Wisconsin, which also held the No. 1 spot briefly before faltering a bit in the stretch? Perhaps get ready for the NCAA Tournament, tweak your lineup and work on adjustments without injured rebound leader Brian Butch.

Big Ten Tournament

Championship push can ruin a team

Tough conference games, followed by the rigors of finals week can tire team for NCAA Tournament

By Marla Ridenour

Beacon Journal sportswriter

Ohio State coach Jim O'Brien had plenty of worries in 2002, a season eventually wiped off the books for rules violations.
As the Buckeyes entered the NCAAs, O'Brien wondered about the impact of OSU's championship in the Big Ten Tournament. He feared that three rugged and emotional victories had left the Buckeyes spent as they traveled to Albuquerque, N.M., and his instincts were right. Fourth-seeded OSU lost to 12th-seeded Missouri in the second round.
O'Brien's successor, Thad Matta, could have the same concerns as Ohio State opens conference tournament play Friday at the United Center in Chicago. It will face the winner of the Michigan-Minnesota game, which starts at noon today (ESPN).

Besides giving the winner an automatic NCAA bid, what's the point of the Big Ten tournament? Would most teams prefer to win the regular season, or the tournament? (It's not a rhetorical question.) Maybe the tournament championship is more-or-less a secondary prize?

I'm not suggesting that the players should go in half-assing their games. Obviously, as a player, coach, etc. you want to win every game.

a team should be judged on their regular season and the conference tourney should be icing on the cake.....just my opinion.

Ohio State has nothing to lose in this tourney, they are a lock to get a #1 seed in my opinion.....I expect we will play loose and with confidence.

Minny-TSUN just tipped off on ESPN2.

Very ugly game so far. Even without Petway's haircut.

3-0 TSUN at the first TV timeout. Brent just asked it this was the battle for the Little Brown Jug. :tongue2:

Now 9-7 Minny at the under-12 TV timeout. TSUN is 3-13 from the field.

The announcers have talked about the cold building, the early start time, the lack of practice time in the United Center, and the difficult shooting background. The refs actually switched the basketball since it was supposedly too hard.

At least they only have the college 3-point line on the floor. The Big East tourney in MSG has two lines on the floor, which has confused some players.

I'm torn between wanting to see Ohio State beat Michigan 3 times in one season, and wanting to see Michigan lose to a much worse team.

According to ESPN.com scoreboard, it's 16-16 at 3:25 to go in the first half.

Last year their Minnesota loss sent them to the NIT. A repeat performance would be very Amaker-esque. At least last year Minny had Grier, they are awful this year. They are playing at that level right now, yet UM can't pull away.

I would hope so, I can't imagine much worse...
These teams are really at a disadvantage without any practice time and playing the early game...
I think their lack of talent is their disadvantage...
