Big Ten Men's Tournament 2007

ScriptOhio;770939; said:
The answer to your question is: It is possible; but it is not automatic. Ohio State could still end up with a #1 seed, they both could get a #1 seed, or neither could ger a #1 seed.

The Big 10 tournament winner just gets the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. If Wisconsin won the tournament Ohio State would still get an "at large" bid. It is up to the NCAA selection committee to determine the seeds. The seeds are based on a lot of things, including: overall record, strength of schedule, quality wins, and RPI etc.

Here is an NCAA site that may help explain the selection/seeding process:

Don't forget that the Big Ten Championship is the last game before the brackets come out. So, it may not matter who wins the championship between OSU and Wisconsin if they both get there.

Absolutely correct. Wining or losing that game has zero impact on the NCAA seed, its determined before the game is played. We are a 1 seed now, avoid an upset and make it to the BTT game and its a done deal.

Mike Lucas: Round 3 between Badgers and Spartans looms in Big Ten tournament

Michigan State's dual-threat guard Drew Neitzel - who's equally adept at finding shots for his teammates as a point guard or hunting his own as a scoring guard - dropped his guard briefly after Saturday's loss to the University of Wisconsin basketball team. Neitzel used the words "frustration" and "anger" to describe what the Spartans had to get out of their system during the Big Ten tournament later this week in Chicago. Not that Neitzel necessarily had a "rubber match" with the Badgers in mind when he expressed his sentiments; for, at the time, he probably had no idea how the conference seedings might play out.

BIG TEN INSIDER
Tournament will serve as audition for Big Dance

Monday, March 05, 2007 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
The Big Ten Tournament this week will serve as an NCAA Tournament play-in for at least a few teams. Fifth-seeded Purdue, No. 6 seed Illinois, and No. 7 Michigan State all possibly need at least one win to extend their seasons, while No. 4 seed Iowa and No. 8 Michigan need more than that.
Add in Ohio State and Wisconsin still angling for No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament, and every game should matter, which isn't always the case. So let's get the individual honors out of the way now.

Illini prep for Big Ten tourney
BY JOHN SUPINIE
COPLEY NEWS SERVICE

Published Monday, March 05, 2007
CHAMPAIGN - Having lost a regular-season finale that might have locked up a berth in the NCAA tournament, Illinois coach Bruce Weber looked toward this week's Big Ten tournament for one last chance.

He isn't alone. Illinois earned the No. 6 seed and meets No. 11 Penn State Thursday at the United Center in Chicago (4:05 p.m., ESPN2). The winner advances to the quarterfinals Friday against No. 3 Indiana. "I think we've shown enough that we belong in the dance, but you've got to go to Chicago and win at least one," Weber said. "If you lose right now, you've got yourself in a bind.

I'll post this and then go hide. Any coach of a conference winning, tourney bound team that puts his #1s out on the floor for a stupid conference tournament is a fool. Why take the risk? Why, with a season of 30 games behind you, would you want the extra wear and tear on your kids just before the REAL Tourney starts? And finally, why bother to count the regular season if you're going to determine the championship with a tourney? This is nothing but shameless money talking...

I agree, but it also allows for teams like Minnesota, Penn State, or some other "never gonna get to the NCAA" team to play lottery ticket. Win 3 ad you're in the big show.

Or 4, for the teams you named. :wink2:

I don't think there is much chance of anyone winning this other than the Bucks or Wiscy. I think these teams are head and shoulders above the rest. Anyone who beat them would have a major upset. I guess we are looking at the big 2 little 9 of BB.

I agree that the coach should go deep to the bench in the first couple games of the tourney and if you lose so be it, but it helps in terms of getting a better seed in the tourney and playing at a site closer to home...

Also going one in done in a tourney, could also hurt confidence, and if your confidence is down a couple wins can always bolster it...

See Florida last year...They ran thru the SEC tourney and then thru the NCAA tourney while everyone thought they were dead in the water...

I agree that because we're ranked #1 now, if we make it to the Big Ten title game, we should get a #1 seed. However, should tOSU and Wisky make it to the title game, I could see the tournament committee leaving a #1 seed and a #2 seed open and giving the #1 seed to the winner and the #2 seed to the loser.

If we make the title game there is no way that we don't get a one seed...

I agree with Buckeyeboy on this. I think if Wisconsin and Ohio State both make it to the final game of the tournament whoever wins that game will get the #1 seed. I am not saying that the loser will get a #2 seed because the loser can also get a #1 seed.

I wonder if Gene Smith has to leave the room when they talk about Wisconsin.
