Big Ten Conference Divisions

The designers weigh in...

...
Pentagram's Michael Gericke (a graduate of the University of Wisconsin) and Michael Bierut (husband of 30 years to an Ohio State alumna) have designed the new logo for the conference, announced today. The conference's previous logo hid an '11' in the negative space around the 'T' in 'Ten.' The new logo evolved from this use of negative space and is built on the conference's iconic name without reference to the number of member institutions. "Seeing two numbers at once is clever, but it means redesigning the logo every time the conference expands," says Bierut. "It was time for something direct and simple." The resulting logo features contemporary collegiate lettering with an embedded numeral "10" in the word 'BIG,' which allows fans to see 'BIG' and '10' in a single word.
...

Notice how they intentionally obfuscate the fact that Bierut is a UC grad.

Of course you do  You like almost every design that BPers dislike.
Why? Were the BTN execs too strung out to properly analyze a logo brand?

There is nothing good about it. The negative space is as dominant as the words. Contrast that with the refined, subtle lines used in the Pac-10 logo negative/ space.

The logo is unbalanced. The top letters look a lot bigger because of their font and surrounding choices.

It is incredibly busy. There are so many diffent heights, widths, serif locations, and styles. The typography itself is very poor, the letters are very distracting and displeasing to the eye, let alone whether they make a good logo together.
I can't understand the level of angst people create in themselves over shit that doesn't make a difference. And that's pretty much it.

I don't "like" the logo. I don't "hate" the logo. It just isn't very meaningful to me.

agreed. then again how often do you really see the big ten logo? if so how often in its "true" colors. the only place i really recall seeing it is on the basketball floors and occasionally on some worthless news release... it seems to me that you could put anyone of those logos on a basketball floor without killing the whole floor.

Hey, you all need to look at the bright side. How tired is ESPN going to get of having to use the line:
"Ohio State currently leading The Leaders Division"...

:wink2:

It was kind of them to name one of the divisions after OSU. It's not like they could name the divisions 'Woody' and 'Bo,' otherwise you would hear, "Ohio State currently sits atop the Woody."

Well, luckily they will do like me and everyone else...."Ohio State currently leads their division."

The names are stupid, but is not that big of a deal to me since I will just end up saying "Ohio State's division" and "the other division."

That ugly logo on the other hand will be seen on every football field, basketball court, B10N graphics, etc.
