Big Ten Conference Divisions

The thing is, I thought they had said they hadn't had a chance to really discuss how the schedule was going to play out yet and were just working on the divisions?

So are they actually going to be able to SAY that tOSU-Mich will still be the last game of the year? Did they work out there protected games and shit completely already? Or was this something that they had to agree on and put out there so we wouldn't rage too hard while they make the rest of the scheduling decisions?

Andy Katz on ESPN (believe at your own peril) also just reported that this will be the divisional breakdown as of about 1:50 pm.

Reports that we're looking at this:

MSU, Mich, Neb, NU, Iowa, Min
OSU, Wis, IL, IU, PSU, PU

The Game will remain as the last game of the season.

Only rumors, of course, but the idea that our schedule will include Wisc, PSU, and Mich1gAAn every year... damn!

Not that the skunkweasels have it any better; OSU, Nebraska, Iowa...

So with being in separate divisions pretty much a done deal, would it be possible to have a rule stating that if two teams play the last game of the season and have also both clinched a spot in the CCG, then the CCG will not be played and instead the final game of the season would determine the champion?

Sorry if that's a little hard to follow, it sounded better in my head.

Delany's not going to cancel the rematch - the chance of having a CCG with tOSU and TSUN was his main reason for wanting tOSU and TSUN in separate divisions.

Pardon my French but this whole idea is fucking stupid.

No fucking way is this going to turn out well the first time two teams have their division clinched going into the final week of the season against each other. Whether that be OSU/tSUN, PSU/MSU or w/e.

If you have the teams in separate divisions they CANNOT play each other the final week of the season. Just fucking stupid.

OSU/Mich will never be a throw away game. Even without the rivarly, and even if the rematch is already for certain. Reason? Because likely to have a situation where both teams have "clinched" their division before The Game, then you would likely have one, if not both, in the NCG race. Therefore, The Game would be just as big as "The Rematch" because you gotta win both if you want to go to the NCG.

Think about this situation though...

Had OSU and Michigan had to play again in 2006 in a Big Ten championship game, and had Michigan won...then who would have gone to the NCG? Michigan? Ohio State? BOTH??? Could there have been THREE games?

I like that it stays at the end...and if we ever have to play them again, then we'll kick their ass. I just couldn't handle playing Michigan in October. I'm glad it remains the last game of the year...

After a few years, the conference really needs to think about the basketball scheduling rule for divisions.

Tom Izzo will just run through that division.

It should be for football only. Hoops has the Conference tourney already, and doesn't need divisions. They should make that clear tonight.

You can make just as many scenario's where neither team is in the NCG race.

I agree it will probably never be a "throw away" game but it isn't hard to imagine scenario's where a major starter who is a little nicked up decides its better to rest up for the B10CCG or they give the starters a half and then the backups decide the outcome. You can go on and on.

Spurrier did it the very first year of the SEC CG, he rested players vs FSU to get ready for the SEC CG. The Game as we knew it is gone after 2010.

these are football only divisions...at least that is what I have heard.

Andy Katz and ESPN are saying its for men's basketball as well, with two games against in-division and one crossover.

Very imbalanced if there are divisions for basketball.

Nah there is just no way they can cancel a conference championship game, they would already have been preparing to host it, the tv deals would be inked etc.

No offense taken. Anyone that's followed this thread fairly closely (as you have), knows that I wasn't advocating separate divisions - my post was merely explaining Delany's rationale for wanting the separate divisions.

This setup is my second choice, after having them in the same division. But since they didn't move The Game, I'm not going to go on a rant. Having a power as the protected cross-rivalry game will make it a little tougher for both TSUN and tOSU to win their divisions over time. There will be the occasional NW'ern and Purdue division winner when they have a good team and the schedule favors them.

I think they planned the timing of the announcement as 24 hours before the first kickoff of the year in order to lessen the amount of flak they'll take.
