Big Ten Conference Divisions

Honestly though, Tressel has really made this rivalry one-sided, and his success could be a main reason for them not putting all the weight on OSU-Michigan.

Oh horsepuckey.

I didn't feel that way in 2000 under 'ole 2-10-1 & I sure as hell don't feel that way now.

That just screams that the split is happening. Which is just sad that they are going to fuck it up.

Well the conspiracy theorist in my is screaming that...but realistically it's just as likely that minor donors like me (who don't affect the bottom line much) aren't going to get much more than a polite noncommittal response right now regardless of the decision. So I'm not reading too much into it at this point.

I'll just keep saying New Coke in reference to what's about to happen (no longer could happen).

And for those too young:

New Coke - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"New Coke is the reformulation of Coca-Cola introduced in 1985 by The Coca-Cola Company to replace the original formula of its flagship soft drink, Coca-Cola.

The American public's reaction to the change was poor, and the new cola was a major marketing failure."

Maybe Christmas could be moved to July. It's still a holiday once a year.

They are going back to 1993 and reviewing the teams when factoring in competitive balance from then onward. I am not disagreeing with you man, I still view Michigan as the biggest rival, it always will be. I'm just trying to explain what I think they are factoring in. I view it as faulty logic to some extent. Then again, I probably wouldn't have done anything with the conference in the first place. That being said, if the Big Ten did not make changes to address the current state of college football and the push towards the mega-conferences, they would be looking up, and lose a lot of money.

Big money is what is killing tradition, not Gene Smith or Jimmy D. They are just doing what they have to do to keep up.

Since Penn State joined the Big Ten TSUN has won more games in the Big Ten than any team except for Ohio State.

They have a .691 conference winning percentage vs Penn State's .632.

Wisconsin is at .592 and everybody's darling Iowa has only won 7 more games than they've lost (.532).

They are 10-5 vs Penn State, 8-3 vs Iowa & 8-5 vs Wisconsin over the period. In addition they lead the other teams to have won a championship during the era; Illinois, Northwestern & Purdue... 8-4, 9-4 & 9-4 respectively.

TSUN has won or shared the Big Ten Championship 5 times since 1993.
Penn State & Wisconsin? Three each.
Iowa? Twice

Out of those five championships two were outright (97 & 03). Penn State only has a single outright championship (back in 94) as does Wisconsin (99). Iowa hasn't won an outright championship since 1985.

Yes TSUN has had two shitty years. Even including those two years they have been consistently the second most dominant team in the Big Ten since the inclusion of Penn State.

And in the end killing the tradition will kill the Big Money.

Never let a marketing major run your company.

I don't know, it probably wouldn't have been a good idea to send him a message saying "Don't worry about it, it's not happening". They aren't going to leak that kind of info either way until it's finalized and a formal announcement is made.

In the end, I think OSU-Nebraska could develop into a HUGE rivalry. I'm not downplaying the Michigan game, because I still think it's a very important game. I just think OSU and Nebraska could end up being a rivalry that develops from this merger in the end. Both programs are heading in the right direction, Michigan is not at the moment.

Of course, I'm not exactly unbiased in this, but I'd absolutely LOVE to see that happen. By many yardsticks OSU and Nebraska are two of the best - if not THE best teams over the last 50 years, year in and year out. I'd love to see that develop into a huge new rivalry.

I know they aren't going to leak that kind of info. But a better response would have been that they will take his concern and do what is best for Ohio State. So they could have been more neutral in the response.

Saying they 'regret' his decision is almost confirming that the split will happen.

Keep in mind that I was paraphrasing so don't read too much into my choice of words. The reply was definitely diplomatically neutral in tone.

Anyone want to make a vBet that if Ohio State and Michigan go to separate divisions that Michigan's last game of the season will mysteriously become Michigan State, who, mysteriously, will be placed in the same division as the Wolverines ???

And Ohio State's final game will be Penn State.
