Big Ten Conference Divisions

Jim Delany talks Michigan-Ohio State

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany told me Tuesday that the league is about 80 percent done with the division alignments, and he hopes to make an announcement by mid September. But he can confirm one part of the plan right now: Ohio State and Michigan will play every year.

"We're not losing the Ohio State-Michigan game," Delany said.

...and Adam correctly points out that isn't the issue...

I remember thinking when Nebraska initially joined the conference that a geographical split may not be the best for competitive balance. I'd almost accept that split at this point.

Over 112 seasons and 106 meetings, Ohio State and Michigan have never met twice in a season. I guess everything has to end sometime (maybe not Joe DiMaggio's hit streak record).

I've been up for the geographic split from the very beginning, but it looks like the chances of that are slim. I don't think it's that imbalanced competitively, and how much balance does there need to be? A lot of people have referenced the North/South imbalance in the Big12. Was that really a problem or was it just another thing to bitch about when the conference was going down the crapper?

If the sleeping giant in the Big10 would ever wake up and join the big boys, we wouldn't be having this discussion. The sleeping giant I am talking about is Illinois. If they ever find someone who can coach and lockdown most of the Chicago area talent, then we'll have another perennial power.

It's like every single story is about how dumb the move would be, yet there's nothing anyone can do about it (short of boycotting games, stopping donations or publicly protesting at respective stadiums).

It's almost like your parents continually telling you not to speed on ice and you go ahead and do it.

Big Ten hellbent on taking $tupidity and greed to the next level | CollegeFootballTalk.com

Be warned, Big Ten: you move The Game, you will rip the heart and suck the soul out of the single greatest property the conference owns. And for what, a few more advertising dollars every few years when they do happen to stumble into a title showdown? One that will, incidentally, likely be contested in a sterile, domed, neutral location as opposed to yet another reason that The Game is what it is -- The Big House and The Shoe.

The shame in all of this is not the fact that it's nearly a done deal; the shame is the fact that it's being considered at all.

I still say

tOSU-Michigan same division

Last regular season week of the Big Ten=3rd saturday in November=tOSU-Michigan and the other big rivalries

Have a bye week in between that week and conference championship week. That lets you have your big time rivalry game at the end of the year, while giving you time to recover for the conference championship game. Not to mention you give the fans an extra week to buy tickets, make travel arrangements etc

fuck Penn State

But this isn't your grand daddy's Big Ten anymore. The days are gone where whatever was good for the big two was good for the little eight as well. Now there are two other national powers sitting at the table with just as money and just as much influence. And the explosion of revenue from the Big Ten Network has created a business venture where everyone is considered an equal partner. Suddenly, the Buckeye's and Wolverines see their iron grip rusting away, and it scares them to death.
seriously, fuck them

Please. If you really want to kill the rivalry, put Michigan and Ohio State in the same division and let them play at noon in November. If you want to take the rivalry to the next level, separate them so we all get the game we really want to see.
like they know a damn thing about what a rivalry is

I hope they turn into the backwater piece of shit football program that they are once Paterno dies, struggling to be relevant on an east coast that doesn't care about college football, cut off culturally and competitively from the rest of the Big Ten, all but guaranteeing Ohio State a bid in the conference championship game against Michigan or Nebraska each year

stupid fuckers ran a cake walk independent schedule forever (Temple as a rival, what a fucking joke), have won as many Big Ten championships as Northwestern since joining the conference, and they have the gull to pretend like what they want fucking matters

fuck penn state, and fuck expanding east in the next round of teams

The next defensive/spin strategy by Gene Smith is to ask if the date of the Ohio State-Michigan game in other sports such as basketball, hockey, wrestling or baseball has ruined those rivalry games. When saying this, he'll also be forgetting that everything has been built off of football.

So he'll be comparing women's soccer to football.

The only way to force change or status quo is to hit Ohio State, Michigan, or the Big Ten in the pocket book. All parties know that public outcry will eventually die down, therefore they're brushing that off as a short-term nuisance (kind of like the black stripe on the sleeves or Pro Combat uniforms).

I actually am regretting that I linked to that Penn State site, the more I read of their fan base, the more I realize that they are basically just a bunch of pathetic attention whores desperately seeking attention and relevance in the college football world.

As I mentioned, they have won three championships since joining the Big Ten, the same number as Northwestern over the same time span, and they have barely sniffed a shot at a national championship. They have become a second rate Big Ten team desperately trying to cling to the glory they once knew playing a shitty independent schedule. This is why they constantly compare themselves to the big dogs even though they can only muster a good season once every three or four years.

They seriously fucking annoy me.

Why stop with football?

You can move the Red Sox to the NL East and put the Mets in the AL East. Philadelphia needs an "northeastern partner", and the Mets are the Yankees "natural rival" anyway. Plus, you can always make sure the Yankees & Red Sox meet in interleague play, plus they could face off in the World Series ZOMG!!!!1!11!!1!

Army-Navy on July 4?

The worst part is if this happens, they are going to force the Penn State game as the 'new' rivalry for the end of the season before the championship game.
